We are excited about this new film version about Hildegard von Bingen. A woman, who over the ages fascinated audiences and readers.

German director Margarethe von Trotta directed the movie that was in the official selection at Telluride and Toronto.
Hildegard von Bingen was truly a woman ahead of her time. A visionary in every sense of the word, this famed 12th-century Benedictine nun was a Christian mystic, composer, philosopher, playwright, poet, naturalist, scientist, physician, herbalist and ecological activist. In VISION – From the Life of Hildegard von Bingen, New German Cinema auteur Margarethe von Trotta (Marianne and Juliane, Rosa Luxemburg, Rosenstrasse) reunites with recurrent star Barbara Sukowa (Zentropa, Berlin Alexanderplatz) to bring the story of this extraordinary woman to life. In a staggering performance, Sukowa portrays von Bingen’s fierce determination to expand the responsibilities of women within the order, even as she fends off outrage from some in the Church over the visions she claims to receive from God. Lushly shot in the original medieval cloisters of the fairytale-like German countryside, VISION is a profoundly inspirational portrait of a woman who has emerged from the shadows of history as a forward-thinking and iconoclastic pioneer of faith, change and enlightenment.

Born in Berlin, Margarethe von Trotta is one of the leaders of the New German Cinema movement, as well as one of the world’s most important feminist filmmakers. From the early 1960s, after returning to Germany from Paris (where she encountered the Nouvelle Vague and the films of Ingmar Bergman), von Trotta then pursued acting, working closely with both Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Volker Schlöndorff, who later became her husband in 1971. She went on to direct a number of award winning and critically acclaimed films, including “Marianne and Juiane”, “Rosa Luxemburg”, “Rosenstrasse”.

VISION will have its theatrical premiere at Film Forum in NYC on October 13, and will open in Los Angeles at Laemmle theaters on November 5. A national release will follow.

“Nuremberg” in New York, documentary to premiere at film festival

The Film Society of Lincoln Center’s 48th New York Film Festival (FSLC, NYFF), “the essential showcase of the latest and best in American and international cinema,” will complement this years previously announced festival selections (for our German language report, click here) with a series of events and additional programs. “The Masterworks and Special Events at the New York Film Festival allow us to expand the offerings that have traditionally been part of the festival, such as retrospective screenings of older films, as well as to move into new areas of programming in preparation for the opening of the Elinor Bunin-Munroe Film Center in 2011. More than ever, there is truly something for everyone at the New York Film Festival,” said Richard Peña, Selection Committee Chair & FSLC Program Director.

Included in “this fascinating breath of programming” is the U.S. Premiere of “Nuremberg” in the Schulberg/Waletzky Restoration (Stuart Schulberg, 1948, USA; 78m) on September 28. Calling this documentary “one of the greatest courtroom dramas in history,” the festival program notes state:

“Nuremberg” shows how the international prosecutors built their case against the top Nazi war criminals using the Nazis’ own films and records. The trial established the ‘Nuremberg principles,’ the foundation for all subsequent trials for crimes against the peace, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. Though shown in Germany as part of the Allies’ de-Nazification campaign, U.S. officials decided not to release “Nuremberg” in America for political reasons, nor was it shown in any other country. Over the years, the picture negative and sound elements were lost or destroyed. Sandra Schulberg and Josh Waletzky’s restoration uses original audio from the trial, allowing you to hear the defendants’ and prosecutors’ voices for the first time. The film ends with Justice Robert H. Jackson’s stirring words: “Let Nuremberg stand as a warning to all who plan and wage aggressive war,” words which leap the decades and make “Nuremberg” startlingly contemporary.

A panel discussion will follow the 6:15 screening on September 28, featuring the following participants: Benjamin Ferencz, chief prosecutor, Nuremberg trial of the Nazi Einsatzgruppen; first head of Claims Conference for Jewish restitution; advocate of the International Criminal Court; Aryeh Neier, human rights advocate; President, Open Society Institute; former director of ACLU and Human Rights Watch; Emilio DiPalma, one of the courtroom guards seen in the film; author of memoir Just a Kid: A Guard at the Nuremberg Trials; Sandra Schulberg, creator (with Josh Waletzky) of the restoration; daughter of the film’s writer/director Stuart Schulberg.

New York Film Festival wählt “Räuber”

Die deutsch-österreichische Koproduktion „Der Räuber” (“The Robber”) von Benjamin Heisenberg wurde für die kommende 48. Ausgabe des New York Film Festival (NYFF) ausgewählt. Die Kommission erklärte, der Film sei genauso präzise und konzentriert wie der Titelheld. Im Zentrum stünde die „brilliant kalibrierte Darstellung“ von Andreas Lust, die mal „physisch explosiv“ und dann wieder „eng angespannt“ ist.

Unter den 28 Filmen aus 14 Ländern im Hauptprogramm befinden sich noch zwei weitere mit Deutschland koproduzierten Filme. „Post Mortem“ von Pablo Larrain entstand mit Chile und Mexiko und „My Joy“ („Schastye moe“) von Sergei Loznitsa in Zusammenarbeit mit der Ukraine. Als Sonderpräsentation wählten die Organisatoren die restaurierte Fassung von „Nuremberg“ aus, einer Dokumentation über den ersten Kriegsverbrecherprozess (mehr Informationen in englischer Sprache). Laut IMDB wurde der Film unter dem Titel „Nürnberg und seine Lehre“ ab 1948 in Deutschland weitläufig gezeigt, jedoch nicht in den Vereinigten Staaten.

Die Schweiz ist beim NYFF mit „Film Socialisme“ von Jean-Luc Godard vertreten. Weitere Altmeister im Programm sind Abbas Kiarostami (“Certified Copy/Copie conformé“), Mike Leigh (“Another Year”), Manoel de Oliveira („The Strange Case of Angelica/O estranho caso de Angélica”), Raul Ruiz („Mysteries of Lisbon/Misterios de Lisboa“) und Clint Eastwood. Als offizielle Abschlußpräsentation zum 10. Oktober platziert, markiert „Hereafter“ den vierten Eastwood-Titel im Programm nach „The Changeling“ (Centerpiece 2008), „Mystic River“ (Eröffnungsfilm 2003) und „Bird“ (1988). Richard Peña, Auswahlkomiteevorsitzender und Programmdirektor der veranstaltenden Film Society of Lincoln Center, erklärte, „Hereafter“ stelle unter Beweis, daß Eastwood auch weiterhin die gewagtesten und provokativsten Filme in Amerika mache. Warner Bros. startet den übersinnlichen Thriller dann am 22. Oktober landesweit in den USA.

“A Film Unfinished” finally opens and sheds light on Nazi propaganda

On August 18, Oscilloscope Pictures opens Yael Hersonski’s “A Film Unfinished” in New York at the Film Forum (209 W. Houston Street) and Lincoln Plaza Cinemas (1886 Broadway), on August 20th the documentary premieres in Los Angeles at The Laemmle Royal and in Encino, California at Laemmle Town Center. This will be followed by a national run of the film throughout the fall.

Film Forum welcomes the filmmaker in person on Thursday, August 19, and Saturday, August 21, for the 8:20 shows.

The Huffington Post wrote an excellent piece about the film and the controversy behind the R-rating. “This incredibly powerful film is a must for everyone,” Richard Z. Chesnoff writes.

Since the end of Word War II, one copy of a 60-minute (unfinished) propaganda film, shot by the Nazis in the Warsaw Ghetto in May 1942, labeled simply “Ghetto,” sat undiscovered in an East German archive. “A Film Unfinished” presents the entire film, carefully noting fictionalized sequences and juxtaposes them with footage of the entirely different reality at the time. Based on actual court records, the frame recreates the interview between the cinematographer identified with the production and his interrogator, as performed by Rüdiger Vogler and Alexander Beyer, respectively.

Der deutsch-israelische Dokumentarfilm “A Film Unfinished” (U.S.-Start: 18. August, for locations, please read our English-language announcement) konnte auch im Widerspruchverfahren nicht die von Filmemacher Yael Hersonski und Verleih Oscilloscope Laboratories gewünschte reduzierte Freigabe erhalten. Mit 12 zu drei Stimmen beließ es die Motion Picture Assoc. of America bei „Restricted“ (Children Under 17 Require Accompanying Parent or Adult Guardian) wegen „verstörenden Bildern von Holocaust Grausamkeiten, einschließlich expliziter Nacktheit“.

Damit sind Schulvorführungen- und andere pädagogische Aktivitäten ohne ausdrückliche elterliche Zustimmung also unmöglich, erklärte das Team und verwieß ausserdem auf die Steven-Spielberg-Präsentation „The Last Days“, die bei gleichen Bildinhalten mit einem PG-13 (Parental Guidance) bedacht worden war. Oscilloscope Chef Adam Yauch ergänzte, in einer Welt in der junge Leute mit „bedeutungsloser Unterhaltung bombardiert“ würden, sei es “bedauerlich, daß ihnen ein Film von wirklich erzieherischem und geschichtlichem Wert vorenthalten“ werde. Mit Preisen in Sundance und bei den Hot Docs bedacht, sowie bei der Berlinale mit einem Ehrenplatz bedacht, wählte „Unfinished“ einen 1942 im Warschauer Ghetto von den Nationalsozialisten gedrehten Propagandafilm als Grundlage. Alexander Beyer und Rüdiger Vogler treten in dem fiktiven Rahmen als Verhörer bzw. Kameramann auf. (AFu.)

Unter den 25 Titeln für die Dokumentarsektion des kommenden Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) qualifizierte sich Werner Herzogs Entdeckungsreise in die urzeitlichen Höhlen von Chavet als eine von zwölf Weltpremieren. Danker der eigens entwickelten Spezialausrüstung kann Herzog in „Cave of Forgotten Dreams“ den Blick auf die über 30 000 Jahre alten Fresken in 3D gewähren. Die chilenisch-französisch-deutsche Koproduktion „Nostalgia for the Light” von Patricio Guzmán wurde unter die “Masters” der Doku-Reihe gestellt.

Bekannte Namen bestimmen die vom 9. bis 19. September gebuchte 35. Ausgabe des renommierten Festivals. Unter den bislang 51 Special Presentations, Galapremieren und „Master“-Auswahlen befinden sich u. a. Während der Glamourbereich also ohne deutsche Beteiligung auskommt, buchte die zehnte Geburtstagsausgabe von ‚Wavelength’ immerhin zwei Beiträge für die 36 Filme und Videos umfassende Experimentalwerkschau. Vor kurzem von 8 auf 16 mm umkopiert, ist „Blow-Ups: Portrait, Tea Time, Red Curtain” von Helga Fanderl in einem von sechs Programmen platziert. Bei 120 Minuten Länge is “Ruhr” derweil eigenständig terminiert. Der Amerikaner James Benning auf eine HD-Videoreise in eben jene deutsche Industrieregion. Das Programmheft lobte die zweiteilige Struktur mit sechs langen Takes und einem „meisterlichen“ zweiten Take von 60 Minuten Länge. (AFu.)

Informative little book of language

In this little book linguist David Crystal usefully sums
up the history of the the thing that sets the homo sapiens apart from
all other animals, language. Written with a younger and non-linguist audience
in mind it is especially joyful to read the well layouted little book
and review known things about language and learn some new things along
the way.
He beautifullly introduces the reader to the subject and splits it neatly
into 40 interesting chapters, one of them for example ethymology: That
the word salary comes from the salaire of the Roman soldierst might be
known, but that the same root is in sausage and also in the Spanish salsa
is probably a lesser known fact.
He also includes tweeting and facebooking, modern an ancient word plays,
maybe you know what anagrams are, but not what palindromes and lipograms
are?
How language came to be is universal, still the German language is referenced
a couple of times in particular, when it comes to its close connection
with English.

On the occasion of Troma Entertainment’s 35th anniversary, Lloyd Kaufman, company president and creator of The Toxic Avenger, attended a mid-July retrospective in three German cities. On the program at Raw Temple (Berlin), Cinestar Saarbrücken (presented by SplatterdayNightFever) and KommKino Nürnberg are, amongst others, “Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead” and the world premiere of Markus Jurchen’s fan flick “Attack of the Tromaggot.”

Bono: I’m ready, rebuilt by German engineering

As German World Magazine reported U2 lead singer Bono was hospitalized in Germany in June.

Now the band announced on their website u2.com that they are coming back.

The famous singer announced: “I’m ready, rebuilt by German engineering. Better design, I’m told.”

Bono elaborates: “I’m very well. I can sit. I can stand. I can move around a bit. Feeling strong, feeling confident, know what I’m saying?
I actually wanted to apologize for the trouble that this injury has put you all through and those of you that bought tickets and organized hotels and travel plans, it’s a very big deal…we don’t take you for granted. It was not a lot of fun for me, the injury was quite serious.”

Homeland Security hilft Hollywood

“Piraterie ist Diebstahl, klar und deutlich”, erklärte Vizepräsident Joe Biden am 22. Juni bei der Veröffentlichung des 65-seitigen und „wirklich gründlichen und umfassenden“ Programmkatalogs zur Bekämpfung des Diebstahls von geistigem Eigentum. „Wir jagen die Diebe, wir verfolgen die Webseiten…“ Die von der Obama Regierung eingesetzte Spezialistin, U.S. Intellectual Property (IP) Enforcement Coordinator Victoria Espinel, warnte alle diejenigen, „die die Rechte von Amerikas kreativen Talenten zu lange ausgenutzt haben: Wir werden euer Geschäft zerstören“. Zur weiteren Unterstützung waren auch der Generalstaatsanwalt Holder, Commerce Secretary Locke und sogar die für Homeland Security zuständige Staatssekretärin Napolitano erschienen.

Die 33 konkreten Schritte und Maßnahmen, die laut Espinel mit Hilfe von mehr als 1 600 Kommentaren des öffentlichen und privaten Sektors erarbeitet wurden, fallen in sechs Kategorien. Diese reichen von mehr Transparenz und detaillierter Datensammlung bis zu beispielhaftem Verhalten in den eigenen Reihen (keine gefälschten Produkte und Software kaufen). Besondere Schwerpunkte wurden auf die weltweite Verfolgung „unserer IP Rechte“ (z.B. durch Abschalten von Internetportalen, mehr Kooperation und entsprechende Handelsabkommen) und die landesweite Koordination aller Rechtswege und Institutionen gelegt.

Biden führte beispielhaft an, daß das im Department of Homeland Security (DHS) für IP zuständige Netzwerk 22 Teams hat und mehr als 70 Rechtspartner auf föderaler, bundesstaatlicher und lokaler Ebene zuständig sind. Das Justizmisterium hätte 20 weitere zu den bestehenden 31 FBI-Agenten zur IP-Verfolgung engagiert und 15 neue Staatsanwälte dafür eingesetzt. In den letzten sechs Monaten sei die Zahl der Beschlagnahmen durch die Zollbehörden um 30 Prozent auf mehr als 10 000 mit Warenwerten von 350 Mio. Dollar gestiegen und 166 Verhaftungen wurden vorgenommen. Am 30. Juni folgte dann bereits eine neuerliche Breitseite im Kampf gegen die IP Diebe.

Piraterie koste nicht nur bis zu zehn Billionen Dollar im Jahr, sondern – mit Blick auf Medikamente, Autoteile und andere defekte Produkte – auch Leben und Gesundheit. „Fälschungen töten“, so der Vizepräsident, „und beschränken die Kreativität.“ Biden bezeichnete die kreativen Impulse, die Menschen auf der ganzen Welt bewegen und die Kultur beeinflussen, als „unseren vielleicht größten Exportartikel“. Es sei unverständlich, aber wahr, daß man in den Straßen Chinas Filme kaufen könnte noch bevor sie in den U.S. Kinos angelaufen seien. Dies sei aber nicht nur in China der Fall, folgte die schnelle Korrektur, sondern auch in „Ländern, die zu unseren engsten Allierten zählen“. Obwohl die kreativen Gruppen leideten, gehe nicht nur um eine neue Multimillionenfassung von „Robin Hood“. Undank falscher Kevlarwesten seinen Soldaten in Kandahar ebenso gefährdet wie ein Polizist in einer der U.S. Metropolen.
