Homage to Christoph Schlingensief
Film series at the Goethe Institut Washington DC will conclude with a screening on Jan 3 and Jan 6

As a film, theater, and opera director, Christoph Schlingensief (1960-2010) was among the most renowned and creative personalities on the German cultural scene. Fighting passionately against deportation, racism, and human rights violations, Schlingensief acted out of deep moral convictions. His radical works provocatively challenged politics and society, and created a permanent state of insecurity by blurring borders between reality and fiction, art and offense, intention and action.

In cooperation with the National Gallery of Art.

All films will be shown in German with English subtitles. Tickets $7/$4.

White Rose Exhibit Tours the U.S. in 2012 and 2013

A photo exhibition chronicling the brief yet intense bloom of the Weisse Rose (White Rose) resistance movement against the Nazi regime is currently on tour across the US – courtesy of the Weisse-Rose-Stiftung in Munich.

The Weisse Rose (White Rose) was formed in 1942 by a group of students and supported by philosophy professor Kurt Huber at the University of Munich in a bold bid to stand up to Germany’s brutal Nazi regime. The siblings Sophie and Hans Scholl, Alex Schmorell, Willi Graf, Christoph Probst, Traute Lafrenz, Katharina Schueddekopf, and George Juergen Wittenstein were among the core members of the group. By distributing flyers that denounced the crimes against humanity being committed by the Nazi dictatorship they were putting their lives on the line. They were eventually apprehended, tried for treason by the so-called Volksgerichtshof, or People’s Court, resulting in the execution of seven members in 1943. Many other members received severe punishments, including imprisonment. Only one member of this courageous group is still alive today: Professor George Juergen Wittenstein, who resides in Santa Barbara, California.

In the US, the traveling exhibition has already been a huge success. More than 6,000 visitors viewed the exhibit, for example, at the University Library of Columbus, Indiana, and in Ohio, Mayor Mark Mallory declared September 6, the day of the official opening of the exhibit in Cincinnati, “White Rose Day.” The exhibit will tour the US in from 2011 to 2013.

New York: Steuben Parade 2011 Better Than Ever

Grand Marshals Samantha Brown, Travel Channel, Deutsche Welle’s Erik Bettermann, and a large delegation of the “Technisches Hilfswerk” (THW) joined the largest German-American parade in the US on September 17 . More than 25 groups from Germany, hundreds of US groups, and with 25 floats, this year’s Steuben Parade was one of the best parades ever. Thanks to the tireless efforts of its dynamic chairman Lars Halter and his team, the parade was even broadcast live on PBS for the first time in its history, thus reaching the largest audience ever to show the colorful celebration of German-American heritage for which the Steuben Parade in New York is known.

This year’s parade was lead by four Grand Marshals including Samantha Brown, the popular host of Travel Channel´s “Passport to Europe,” as well as Ilse Aigner, German Secretary of Food, Agriculture, and Consumer Protection, Erik Bettermann, Director of Deutsche Welle, and the newly appointed German Ambassador to the United States, Dr. Peter Ammon.

For many years, the Parade Committee has given the honorary title to German Americans from all walks of life to honor their achievements or contributions to German-American friendship. In recent years, Grand Marshals of the Steuben Parade have included former US Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, the legendary Dr. Ruth Westheimer, actor Eric Braeden, entertainers Siegfried & Roy, and many others.

Parade Chairman Halter appreciated the various backgrounds of this year´s Grand Marshals. “Samantha Brown is not only of German ancestry,” he said, “but she is building bridges between the US and Germany in her travel programs that have inspired numerous Americans to travel to Germany, Austria and Switzerland.”

Among the many groups marching in this year´s parade is a large delegation from the “Technisches Hilfswerk” (THW), the all-volunteer disaster relief organization under auspices of the Department of the Interior. It commemorates two recent events that brought the German organization to the US to help with the clean-up: the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina.

The Steuben Parade is named after General Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, a Prussian officer who joined General George Washington´s troops in Valley Forge in the winter of 1777. Maßkrugstemmen is a strength competition that is gaining in notoriety during Oktoberfest season. A Maßkrug is made of double-walled dimpled glass, weighs in at around 2 lbs empty and holds one liter of bier. That’s 33.8 oz or just under 3 American bottles.

Rules: Hold the “Maßkrug” 1. with one arm, 2. completely stretched out and 3. parallel to the floor. Don’t spill any beer!
To hold the filled 1 Liter Stein as long as possible!

Die Maß – often used abbreviation

The Day of German Unity (German: Tag der Deutschen Einheit) is the national day of Germany, celebrated on 3 October as a public holiday. It commemorates the anniversary of German reunification in 1990, when the goal of a unity of Germany that originated in the middle of the 19th century, was fulfilled. Therefore, the name addresses neither the re-union or union but the unity of Germany. The Day of German Unity on October 3rd has been a German national holiday since the reunification in 1990, when the German reunification was brought out in full force. The 3rd of October is a legal holiday of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Swiss director Marc Forster (Finding Neverland, Monster’s Ball, Kite Runner, James Bond) did it again. He created a wonderful, not always easy to digest, piece of art with a strong message and a character driven story. Machine Gun Preacher is the inspirational true story of Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing criminal who undergoes an astonishing transformation and finds an unexpected calling as the savior of hundreds of kidnapped and orphaned children.
Gerard Butler delivers a strong performance in the title role and Academy Award Nominee Michael Shannon is brilliant as usual in the supporting role as best friend.

GA: German Bierfest in Atlanta

The Reinheitsgebot (purity order), are the rules that oversee the process of making German beer. They are also the rules that have made brewing German beer an artform and the outcome, arguably the best beer in the world.

This summer in Atlanta, the 8^th Annual German Bierfest will celebrate the greatness of German beer in a family-friendly environment. Complete with authentic German food, activities for the kids, music and fun, the German Bierfest is not only the only authentic German Bierfest in Atlanta, but the only family-friendly beer festival as well.

The festival takes place on Saturday, August 27^th, 2011, rain or shine, in Woodruff Park in downtown Atlanta.

For the price of admittance ($35 at the door, $30 pre-sold online, and only $25 pre-sold online until June 5), attendees can drink all the beer they can safely consume. Designated drivers are encouraged and can attend for free. No one under the age of 21 will be permitted to consume alcohol. A designated driver service will also be on site for those who find themselves in an unsafe condition to drive home.

Volunteers are needed for two shifts, from 2 – 4:30pm and from 4:30 – 7pm. Volunteers who work for one shift will be provided free admittance to the Bierfest when they are not working. Anyone interested can email bierfest@gaccsouth.com for more information. If you would like to volunteer, please include full name, email address, phone number and preferred shift.
