The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has announced the nominations for the 84th Annual Academy Awards of Merit. Wim Wenders’ “Pina” leads another strong year for German talent. “It is fantastic to be nominated in the category of Best Documentary a second time after “Buena Vista Social Club,” specially as it is the first time for a 3D film to be granted that honor,” the filmmaker said. “All the dancers and collaborators of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, together with the crew and the production company Neue Road Movies, are extremely proud of this.”

In addition to its worldwide box office in 22 countries totaling $16 million to-date, “Pina” already received numerous German and European honors, including the best European Documentary Film Award, the Deutsche Filmpreis for Best Documentary Film, as well as the German Documentary Prize. Recently, Wim Wenders himself was honored with the Bavarian Film Prize’s Life Achievement Award. He was also nominated by the Writers Guild of America (West) in the category Best Documentary Screenplay and received a nomination for the BAFTA Awards in Great Britain in the category Best Foreign Language Film.

As Germany’s official submission, “Pina” had also qualified in the latter category reaching the short list of nine finalists. Among the five final nominees, Germany can take pride in co-producing Agnieszka Holland’s harrowing Holocaust drama “In Darkness” with Canada and submitting country Poland. Providing Berlin and Leipzig locations, Schmidtz Katze Filmkollektiv and Studio Babelsberg also brought in German actors Benno Führmann and Maria Schrader, to name but two. Five German state and federal media organizations provided additional funding.

For “Raju,” their thesis film at Hamburg Film School with support from Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein, director Max Zähle and producer Stefan Gieren received a nomination as Best Short Feature – Live Action. The 24 minute drama revolves about a German couple that adopted a young boy from an orphanage in Kolkata, India. When he disappears, “they realize that their eagerness to help is not the solution, but in fact part of the problem itself,” German Films noted. “Raju” screened at numerous festivals, including Max Ophüls Festival Saarbrücken 2011, Valencia (Spain), Aspen, Col. and Palm Springs, Calif. At the 2011 LA Shorts Fest 2011, “Raju” was deemed Best Foreign Film. In addition earning the top prize at the Angelus Student Film Festival 2011, the film also received the Honorary Student Academy Award 2011 in Bronze. Since 2000, there have been a total of six Oscar nominations and two Oscars for German shorts, “Quiero Ser” by Florian Gallenberger and “Toyland” by Jochen Alexander Freydank.

Last but not least, Lisy Christl was nominated for her Costume Design for Roland Emmerich’s Shakespeare mystery “Anonymous” (co-produced by Vierzehnte Babelsberg Film GmbH Produktion, Berlin). Christl, who began her career working in the wardrobe department for Joseph Vilsmaier’s “Stalingrad” in 1993, has several Foreign Language Oscar candidates on her resume, including “Brother of Sleep”, “Caché (Hidden)” and “John Rabe”. This nomination comes on the heals of Christl’s designer colleagues being honored with mentions from the Art Directors Guild for their work on “Anonymous.”

The 84th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, 26 February 2012 at Hollywood & Highland Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live in more than 25 countries.

A high-level language conference at the Goethe-Institut in New York produced new ideas how to strengthen and promote German language programs. German is still number three.

By Petra Schuermann

Practical thinking, regional cooperation, and targeted advertising: These were the goals agreed upon by the participants invited to the New York language conference hosted by the Goethe-Institut on September 17 with thirty-five top representatives from American education agencies, universities, professional associations and media in attendance to discuss “strategies for a sustainable promotion of German in the USA.”

Although German is still number three behind Spanish and French, and the number of enrollments for German at schools and universities is at six percent, with the trend even slightly on the rise, reported Helene Zimmer-Loew, executive director of the AATG, but a non-existing, no coherent foreign language policy in the US, the aggressive subsidizing of Chinese language teachers in the US by the Chinese Government, and the recent budget cuts that the largest federal foreign language program had to undergo since April, have not created an ideal situation for hoping to grow the number and size of German language programs in the US.
Finally, globalization has create a certain self-complacent pragmatism among Americans: If English is the world language, then why waste time learning other languages?

The participants at the New York workshop all agreed: The practical added value of German in education and in careers, especially in scientific, technical and industrial fields must be conveyed more clearly and loudly. A coordinated promotional campaign for German would ideally bring together German-language promoters and German-language mediators, German diplomatic representatives, German-American chambers of commerce as well as German companies in the US. The working title for the new slogan: “Just Add German.”

Existing PR measures like the ˝Spot the bus“ campaign in Washington DC and the subway advertising that has been tried successfully in Chicago, would certainly also make sense for other bigger cities.

The conference participants also saw a possibility to seek more solidarity at schools and universities with collaborative partners from the areas of science, and engineering to promote German as “Your best Second Major”. Representatives from various German programs in the US stressed the need to expand cooperation between universities, colleges and high schools, particularly at the regional level.

Dr. Eva Marquardt, director of Language Programs North America at Goethe-Institut New York also mentioned that it is no longer enough to market German as just “cool” or “super cool.” “We must promote the practical benefits and added value of German on the job market.

The timing to launch comprehensive PR-campaigns seem to be right since the German Foreign Office in Berlin is currently considering whether in the future to shift its focus back to promoting the German language in the US.

German car makers strong in energy efficiency

By Ingo Ackerschott

When the automobile industry celebrates itself one can hope for presentations of new models and innovations in the areas of technology and fuel consumption. And so visitors to the Los Angeles Auto Show 2011 were not disappointed, for the show set a trailblazing course as the first big North American auto show in this year’s exhibition season with over 50 car debuts and approximately 1000 models. Of course, German car makers Volkwagen, Audi, Porsche, BMW and Mercedes were all present. Volkswagen’s Passat TDI was even among the five finalists nominated for the award traditionally given at the LA Auto Show for the most environmentally friendly car of the year (Green Car of the Year). Honda, however, took the award home, the Japanese winning the race with the “Civic Natural Gas.” Nevertheless it was a success for VW – and auto show visitors were allowed to take the Passat TDI out for a test drive.

Environmental friendliness in all car categories was a central theme. “Visitors to the LA Auto Show have become increasingly interested in the next generation of consumption-efficient cars,” remarked Andy Fuzesi, General Manager of the Los Angeles Auto Show. “This year reveals that different car technologies can fulfill these demands.” On display were around 20 cars with fuel consumption under 1.5 gallons, including the new Chevrolet Spark with its world premiere. In this category Volkwagen presented four cars: With the Jetta TDI, the Jetta SportWagen TDI, the Passat TDI and the Golf TDI the Wolfsburg car makers consistently ran with “Clean Diesel.” Audi, BMW and Mercedes displayed cars with the low-emission diesel technology that has made good headway in the US market. The sales volume of several of these models has been on the rise.

Hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars as well as electric cars also belong to a growth sector. The LA Auto Show presented the internationally most successful hybrid car, the Toyota Prius, in a plug-in hybrid version. In the electric driving mode the Prius has a cruising range of 15 miles with a targeted mileage of 475 miles. According to Toyota, its fuel consumption is 125 mpg. BMW presented two new concepts. The fully electric i3 concept is scheduled for production in 2013, and the realization of the i8 study is planned for 2014. The i8 involves a sports car with a plug-in hybrid drive that draws its energy from the electric i3-engine over the front axis in combination with a three-cylinder internal combustion engine with 164 kW (220 PS) on the rear axle. In tandem this combination achieves the performance of a real sports car with a fuel consumption of around 62 mpg.

Apropos sports cars: Porsche is also pushing forward with alternative drives. The Stuttgart car maker presented two hybrid cars, the Cayenne S and the Panamera S. In a typical Porsche design, the Panamera S, for instance, can attain a maximum speed of 170 mph. Sport car driving and alternative engines are not mutually exclusive.

If the saying “all good things come in threes” truly applies to human fortune, then fans of American soccer can count on experiencing more joy in the future.

Twice Jürgen Klinsmann (47) has been on the top of the wish list of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) as national trainer – after World Cup 2006 in Germany and a year ago in South Africa. Both times, however, the elected redeemer from Germany and USSF President Sunil Gulati found no common denominator in the terms of contract. Since July 29, 2011, this is history. When on that Friday evening at 6:30 PM CET the news ticker announced: “Klinsmann new US coach,” it was certain that the third attempt had finally culminated in the desired agreement. One should never say never….

The Swabian discovered the thrill of being national trainer when he managed the German national team to third place in the World Cup 2006 hosted in his native Germany. With Bayern Munich, however, where he was on the payroll from the summer of 2008 to April 2009, he had given up the pleasure of being a soccer teacher – but only as a club coach in Germany. Between the North Sea and the Zugspitze, after the failed experiment with the German record master, the polyglot (he speaks fluent English, French, Italian and Spanish) was regarded more than ever as a project leader: that is, as one who can start a process, push through changes, but should leave the training to others.

In his adopted American homeland nobody (yet) doubts the abilities of the successor of Bob Bradley, who took over the US team four years ago and was released after the 2:4 final match in the prestigious Gold Cups against archrival Mexico. “Jürgen was a very successful player and a coach with enough experience and knowledge to advance our project,” federation head Gulati praised the former striker at the presentation in New York. National player Steven Cherundolo from German national league team Hannover 96 is also pleased with the new boss, “from whom he expects new ideas and new structures.” The sports channel ESPN headlined the event as “The beginning of a new era.” Even basketball megastar Dirk Nowitzki is convinced that the relationship between Klinsmann and the Americans will work. “I think it’s a great fit for both,” twittered the NBA champion from the Dallas Mavericks.

As in 2004 with the German national team Klinsmann has taken over (“I am proud and honored to be named national trainer”) once again a team whose performance curve is on the downward slope. The USA has fallen to 30th position in FIFA rankings. Similar to the radical restructuring of the German national team the former world and European champion will also focus with the US team on young players, fitness, and an armada of assistants.

The American German faces an Herculean task. He must reform the US club as rigidly as he did years ago as national league coach in his native country. A new spirit of optimism is needed – a dream job for career optimist and motivator Klinsmann who trusts his unbridled passion: “Just do it.” The former baker apprentice, who learned the craft in his father’s company in Botnang, has long made his home in the USA. He enjoys living in California with his American wife, a former model, and his children, who were all born in the USA. This, however, is something Germans resented, especially after the successful preparation of the German national team for the World Cup 2006. Yet despite an attractive offer for the German national trainer to stay in Germany after the World Cup 2006, he gave preference to his life in the USA. And it seems to have been a good choice because Klinsmann now drives to his new workplace, the USSF National Training Center in Carson, California, from his magnificent residence in Huntington Beach, where he has lived since 1998, in just half an hour. Just ideal general conditions.

That he is not taking on an easy job was clear after the first three test international matches. Not against Mexico (1:1) nor against Costa Rica and Belgium (both 0:1) could a match be won. Klinsmann is thus the first US coach since the Munich native Lothar Osiander (1986 to 1988) who did not win one of his first three friendly matches. With his debut as German national league coach seven years ago he started with two victories and one draw. “We need to be patient,” demands Klinsmann, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” It will become serious for the US boys next summer when they start the qualification process for World Cup 2014 in Brazil. By then, assures the coach, he will present a competitive national team. - By Gunnar Meinhardt

On September 17, 2011, the Austrian-American Council West (AAC) celebrated its 30-year jubilee in a splendid ceremony at Los Angeles’ Wilshire Country Club.

The elegant affair was attended by more than 120 guests who celebrated under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Christian Prosl, Austrian Ambassador to the United States and The Honorable Dr. Karin Proidl, Austrian Consul General of Los Angeles.

The “In Recognition of Extraordinary Service” awards were handed out in a special presentation. Lena Strauss and Dr. Robert Ward were honored as 2011 Members of the Year. Guests were then entertained with a musical tribute to Walter Jurmann performed by soprano Monica Schober and tenor James Carlin along with the enchanting music of Professor Laszlo Cser’s Quartet on a Blüthner piano generously made available by Helga Kasimoff.

More than 30 years ago, Austrian-born Professor Fritz Molden, of Molden Publishing house, whose mother wrote the lyrics for the Austrian anthem, conceived the idea of combining the Austrian societies in the US under one umbrella organization, the Austrian-American Council (AAC). Six regional councils were proclaimed during an official visit to New York by Austria’s President in 1981. The AAC facilitates and promotes friendship, cooperation and outreach between Austria and the United States.

One of the greatest successes is the recognition of the Council’s tremendous contributions by President Bill Clinton, who proclaimed September 26 to be Austrian-American Day in 1997.

The proceeds of this year’s event benefited a renowned charity: SOS Children’s Villages founded by the Austrian Hermann Gmeiner in 1949, and one of Angelina Jolie’s favorite charities. – By Sonia Laszlo; Photo: Tshombe Sampson.

Despite her success with the US National Soccer Team this year, American soccer pro Alexandra Krieger feels right at home with German soccer club 1. FFC Frankfurt. German World staff writer Ingo Ackerschott met the personable young woman in Frankfurt for an exclusive interview.

2011 was a special year for Alexandra “Ali” Krieger. With the US women’s national team the 27-year-old American pro soccer player became World Cup Vice Champion – in Germany, or more precisely, in Frankfurt, where she has successfully played defense for the 1. FFC soccer team since 2007. As a member of the US national team she had already taken home many trophies, including the UEFA Women’s Cup 2008, the German Championship 2008, and the German DFB Cup 2008 and 2011. For four years now the Frankfurt am Main metropolis has been her second home. She feels welcome and at home here, has friends. Although she has German ancestors, she did not know a word of German when she moved in Frankfurt in 2007. Now she fluently speaks the language of her teammates, although with a cute American accent. Check it out for yourself and watch the short video clip below.

GW: Ms Krieger, how does it feel to return to Germany after the World Cup?

A. Krieger: Very good! During the World Cup I noticed that I missed Frankfurt. I wanted to return to Germany and play for 1. FCC in the Bundesliga and the Champions League. If I play here, I can maintain my top level and optimally prepare for the Olympics. I feel very much at home here. I like Germany. I like playing soccer, and this is a soccer country. I am happy to be back.

GW: How long have you played soccer?

A.K.: I started playing when I was six. I was not really playing soccer. I simply ran after my brother on the field. At age seven I joined my first soccer club. Later I played at my university, Penn State University. Until 2007 I played with Washington Freedom. Finally, I came here to Frankfurt. This season will be my fifth in Germany.

GW: What was different about your return this time compared to when you first came to Frankfurt in 2007?

A.K.: When I came to Germany in 2007, I was not sure if it would be good for me. It was a different country, a different culture, different people. Over time I grew used to it and felt comfortable. For me it is an honor to play with other female soccer players. Now I even have a few friends who don’t have anything to do with soccer. (…) My “German sister” is my advisor’s daughter. And through her I have made other friends. (…)

GW: Which cities have you visited in Germany?

A.K.: With the team I have traveled throughout Germany. I think Dresden is beautiful. I once went to the Oktoberfest in Munich, and Berlin is another great city. When I have time, I like traveling to Heidelberg.

GW: We have heard that you have German ancestors from Berlin.

A.K.: Yes, my great-grandfather. He emigrated to the USA, but is no longer alive. I have not yet tried to find out whether I still have relatives in Berlin. I hope I’ll have time to check that out this year or next year.

GW: You live in Frankfurt. What do you like about the city?

A.K.: Oh, I think it’s great that people here speak so many different languages. And the people call Frankfurt “Mainhattan” because of the skyscrapers. It’s cool here, the buildings remind me of America. And the food here is very tasty.

GW: Are there things in Germany that you had trouble getting used to?

A.K.: People here are totally direct and honest. In the USA people are more likely to say: “Hey, you look really cool. I like your T-shirt.” Here in Germany they’ll say: “What are you wearing? That doesn’t go together.”

GW: Is there anything that you miss about the USA?

A.K.: Yes, my family and friends. My family comes to visit once or twice a year, but that is not enough. (…) I myself travel twice a year to the USA, for Christmas and in the summer. And occasionally for the US national team. (…)

GW: Was it special that the host country was Germany?

A.K.: Yes, of course! I thought how cool is that? We’re playing in the finals, and in Frankfurt. To be honest, it was a dream. Unfortunately, it wasn’t perfect because we lost. But we were one of the best teams out of many.

GW: Do you know Jürgen Klinsmann?

A.K.: Yes, although not personally. But I was very happy when he became the German trainer of the US men’s national soccer team. I hope he’ll do a good job.

GW: Where did you learn such good German?

A.K.: I didn’t speak German at all when I came here in 2007. My coach said it would be good if I could speak a little German. So I registered at the Volkshochschule (German term for Community College). Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, I intensively studied German for three hours. And now I’ll be continuing with Level 8. It’s a lot of fun. I need to chat and talk with the girls on the team. It’s important that I can understand them. (…)

GW: What are your goals and dreams for the future?

A.K.: I would love to be a TV sportscaster. I like watching sports and interviews on TV. But I can also imagine doing event management. And in soccer, of course, I still want to become world champion. Hopefully I’ll be able to play until 2015. It would also be great to win a gold medal at the Olympics. And, of course, with 1. FFC I want to become champion again. And reaching the Champions League finals would be super.

“Kosslick has long been engaged in issues related to food, pleasure and ecology, as well as their cultural significance and cinematic presentation,” MoMA noted. In 2007, the Berlinale launched Culinary Cinema to call attention to that very relationship, Kosslick confirmed. “Food brings people together and connects them with their surroundings. A country’s cuisine is a yardstick of its culture. I kindly thank MoMA and especially [chief curator] Rajendra Roy for this wonderful invitation.” In addition to a film food inspired podium discussion, Gabriel Kreuther, Michelin-starred chef of The Modern, conceived dishes inspired by the films in the series. Thankfully, “Supersize Me” was not on Kosslick’s menu.

German Peter Müller-Munk, born in Berlin in 1904, is among them. He is best known for his 1935 design of a chrome-plated brass pitcher called “Normandie”. It resembles the silhouette of the French ocean liner’s prow. The pitcher was made by Revere Copper and Brass, Inc, and was produced until 1941.

In Berlin he studied design with Bruno Paul and silversmithing with Waldenar Ramischin. In 1926 the designer moved to New York. After designing for a year for Tiffany, he set up his own workshop. He exhibited at several Metropolitan Museum shows in 1929 and 1930.

In 1959 he won one of the first ALCOA industrial design awards. He consulted with US Steel regarding their newly-introduced vinyl-coated steel sheets, with decorative patterns embossed into the vinyl. They be formed, drawn or stamped like any sheet steel.
In 1964, Peter Müller-Munk consulted with US Steel regarding their Unisphere symbol that dominated the 1964 World’s Fair, and still remains in Flushing Meadows.

He died in 1967 in Pittburgh, Pennsylvania, his company Peter Müller-Munk Associates (PMMA) continues as an active design firm. It is well-known for way-finding design at major airports and public spaces.
