Mercedes-Benz USA announced on April 28, 2011, that it was opening the company’s first Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy in Los Angeles in October 2011, offering a fully integrated driver’s education program and school that incorporates online, classroom and behind-the-wheel training for Los Angeles-area teens. 

The Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy is unveiling details for its teen driving school at the annual California State PTA Convention, where approximately 2,500 California PTA members are attending from April 28 – May 1, 2011 in Long Beach, CA.

Mercedes-Benz is appointing Carolyn Duchene as Director for the Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy, and she will be responsible for the launch and management of daily operations.  A Mercedes-Benz USA employee since 1994, Duchene has held several positions in the areas of marketing, digital media, training and education, and customer service. 

“In addition to a unique educational approach, our highly qualified staff will be a key differentiator for the Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy.  We are recruiting and hiring the best talent for all areas of operation,” said Duchene. “The Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy will connect with students and parents using a personalized, customer-centric approach that truly creates a unique offering among driver’s education services for new teen drivers.” 

In preparation for its fall launch, the Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy is actively recruiting uniquely qualified driving instructors, who will be groomed to deliver the Academy’s research-based program in a highly effective coaching style.  The Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy instructors are going to be Mercedes-Benz employees and eligible to receive Mercedes-Benz USA benefit packages.

Several auto manufacturers and third-party organizations are currently offering teen driving programs which primarily focus on crash avoidance and defensive driving exercises.  However, Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy aims to be the only car manufacturer to offer a California DMV-approved program, fully integrated with the Graduated Driver Licensing framework.  The goal of the Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy is to prepare students for today’s driving environment by going beyond basic car control skills and rote learning of traffic rules.

The core program utilizes multiple teaching techniques and delivery methods ranging from online learning to interactive classroom sessions and behind-the-wheel training.  The program will incorporate approaches such as digital animation to visualize road hazards in an online program, problem-solving exercises in the classroom, and hands-on experience of risky situations and in-car coaching techniques based on questioning rather than instruction.  This approach is combined with consistent feedback from driving coaches to parents, which aims to assist them in planning their supervised driving practice.  The overall collective curriculum aims to benefit and appeal to the vast spectrum of learning-styles which will ensure greater engagement and absorption of skills and knowledge.

A fully integrated California-focused curriculum will take a student from their instruction permit license stage through their provisional license.  Other offerings include an on-road only curriculum for those who have chosen to complete their driver education requirement through other means, and a tailored program that takes into account individual driver’s needs to further develop and improve driving skills.

“Vehicles, highways, and the driving environment have changed dramatically over the past 60 years, however driver education remains relatively unchanged in the U.S.,” said Alexander Hobbach, Senior Manager of Business Innovation at Daimler AG. “Mercedes-Benz feels there is opportunity to better prepare teens for today’s driving conditions, and while our offering will have premium pricing over existing schools, we are dedicated to delivering significant value based on unique coaching methods and curriculum that is aimed at teaching new teens how to drive safely.”

The Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy is working with several advisors in the finalization of its proprietary curriculum including Daniel R. Mayhew, Senior Vice President of the Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF); Allan Williams, Ph.D., former Chief Scientist at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS); and Bill Combs, Executive Director of the Driver Education and Training Administrators and former Director of Communications at the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA).

 “A teenager’s ability to drive safely should be one of the most important priorities for parents and it is extremely imperative that parents take a very active part in this process from researching driving schools to following through on supervised driving,” said Mayhew.   

Beyond curriculum development that sets new industry standards, The Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy is building on strategic partnerships in an effort to raise awareness about teen driver safety and to also engage educators and parents to ultimately combat the leading cause of deaths among teens, which is motor vehicle crashes according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy, in conjunction with Impact Teen Drivers, will be delivering a public service outreach program through 2-hour parent/teen workshops, delivered in local Los Angeles- area high schools. These workshops will raise awareness on the importance of teaching teens the proper way to drive. Through interactive work groups, parents and their children will discuss the responsibility they have to each other when it comes to driver education while acknowledging that driving is an important part of teenager’s life that leads to more freedom and independence. With the help of the California PTA, approximately twenty schools will be identified to host the workshops beginning late summer.

“The opportunity to have Mercedes-Benz step-up to work with Impact Teen Drivers and law enforcement and education partners to offer driver safety seminars at no cost to Los Angeles-area schools is commendable,” said Kelly Browning, PhD, executive director of Impact Teen Drivers.  “It is crucial that we educate teens and empower them to promote the safe driving message in order to have a fundamental and sustained behavior shift. This isn’t about bad kids doing bad things, but good kids making poor choices. One poor choice can alter or end their lives and the lives of those they care about.” 

  Impact Teen Drivers, Inc., which was founded by the California Association of Highway Patrolmen, the California Teachers Association, and California Casualty, provides education to teens and parents regarding the dangers of reckless and distracted driving through breakthrough campaigns delivered online and in schools.

Martin Kaymer was born on December 28, 1984, in Düsseldorf and – despite his relative youth – is already entering the record books. Thanks to these triumphs, he moved up to third place in the world rankings. He also impressed with consistently good performances on his Ryder Cup debut during October, ultimately helping the Europeans to defeat the U.S. team in a thrilling encounter at the Celtic Manor Resort in Wales.

Mountain sports and especially skiing has always been a natural activity for people born in the Alps. Not only since Gretchen Fraser won Olympic Gold in 1948 as the first American women, and Bill Johnson being the first American Olympic Male Champion in 1984, has skiing and the mountain sports played a part in American culture. Nevertheless, many of those American ski pioneers had German and European roots. Gretchen Fraser, for example, was the daughter of German and Norwegian immigrants and her ski coach Otto Lang who played a major part in her career was born in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The number of European immigrants and especially those with a German, Austrian or Swiss background is countless. All over the Rocky Mountains and especially in ski resorts you can still hear locals that have a German accent and many of them have helped develop the American ski and snowboard industry.

One of the great influences is Klaus Obermeyer, the founder and owner of the world-renown ski apparel company, Sport Obermeyer. He was born in 1919 in the small Bavarian alpine village of Oberstaufen and arrived in Aspen/Colorado in 1947 where he established his business. Even today you find German immigrants calling the US their home and pursuing a career in the snow and mountain sports industry. One of them is Sinah Hoenig CEO of Skihoe Apparel. Skihoe is a recent start up ski apparel company based out of LA. Sinah came to the US in 2007 helping Steve Bellamy, Founder and CEO of The Ski Channel televison network, build the channel. Sinah’s idea of starting a ski apparel brand came along while working for The Ski Channel as she explains:

“It all started in the summer of 2007. A few ski athletes and young people including myself were hanging out in the mountains of Utah and the beaches of California. I kept thinking about the need of a lifestyle apparel brand that represented skiing and everybody I talked to was stoked on the idea. Friends and industry professionals always agreed with me that there was no stylish and hip brand out there for skiers, especially young skiers. The name idea followed shortly after and started with my last name, actually the first 3 letters of my last name which another ski friend of mine was amused by and thought sounded pretty original. That’s how the name Skihoe was born which basically consists out of the word ski and the first 3 letters of my last name”

Since then Skihoe has accomplished a lot. The brand is a registered trademark in the US and Europe and Skihoe became a Corporation registered in California.
To spread the message of Skihoe, the company embarked on a 2-week tour this summer with the legendary Warped Tour, where they partnered with the band The Early Strike to promote Skihoe all across the US and Canada. Along the way Skihoe met up with some famous Skihoe supporters including 2010 Winter Olympic Freestyle Moguls Bronze Medalist Shannon Bahrke. Even though the tour may have since finished, Skihoe isn’t slowing down. The ski apparel brand partnered up with The Ski Channel and became an official sponsor of the Hollywood movie premiere of a ski movie called “The Story” when some 1500 athletes, celebrities skiers and new found snow sport enthusiast filled the Mann’s Chinese Theater in the heart of Hollywood on October 24. The Story is a Ski Channel original production that shows athletes beyond their incredible athletic talent, it shows the person that’s behind the goggles. The film features ski and mountain sports pioneers as well as the best current athletes out there such as Lindsay Vonn, Bode Miller and Bobby Brown. And then once again, a German name appears on the screen, Willy Bogner who plays a big part in the movie and proves once again in 2010, that German skiing culture and expertise still play a major part in American Skiing.

Skihoe just launched their 2010-11 clothing line, and recently held a photo shoot to promote the collection. Among the distinguishing features of the upcoming collection are the materials used in the manufacturing such as high-performance fabrics that function as the perfect base layer on the slopes. I often hear people say “My body is my temple”. It’s sometimes said jokingly but I truly believe we shall treat our body as it is a temple, something precious and holy.

I grew up in Vienna, the city of Applestrudel, Sacher cake and sweet dumplings. When I was ten I looked like such a big yeast dumpling. I was obese, addicted to sugar and not much into sports. At a young age I hated myself for being fat and for being made fun of by my classmates. And that resulted in more eating.

All that changed in my late teens.  I started exploring health foods and exercise. I lived the extreme opposite, from vegan to raw food and fasting and extreme hours of exercise. I just needed to prove that I can be part of the “ripped” society. But again I was not listening to my body and its needs.

Luckily over the years I learned to listen, through meditation and through the realization that without my body, I cannot express my full potential. True, we are certainly more then just our bodies, but without it, we could not enjoy the pleasures of our lives here on earth.

It’s interesting to see how we often forget to treat our own body with respect. We sometimes take better care in servicing our cars.  It’s as if our bodies will run for years and years without any tune up, and sometimes it is just an annoying thing, that needs to be fed.

But the truth is that a healthy body is the foundation to a happy life. It’s time to treat it with kindness, to appreciate and bless it. Our relationship with our body should be one of love and adoration.

It’s time to stop abusing and ignoring our bodies and time to listen to our needs and act upon them.

Ask yourself what you need today. Become sensitive to that voice within. Do you need some exercise, a power hike, some weight lifting or yoga? Your individual needs will change everyday. Check in with yourself. Maybe you need some rest. How about your nutrition? Do you abuse your body by not eating enough or do you overeat? What changes can you make in your meal planning? Feel the pleasure of nourishing yourself with good quality food.  When was the last time you went for a dentist visit? Or a check up with a doctor or alternative health practitioner? How about your clothing? Is it comfortable and do you feel and look good in them? Change it if not. What else do you need? A cuddle perhaps? Make sure to get one. Take care of yourself. Today!

Also Emil Gampe – featured in the GW Issue Spring 2010 – has not only won Bravo’s “Launch My Line” show, but also successfully worked with major labels and celebrities for several years before starting his own line Emil Couture.

Well established in the fashion scene is Devi Kroell. Her handbag line was picked up by Barneys New York, featured in Vogue, W, Harpers Bazaar, Elle, worn by celebrities and is even being sold at national retailer Target. The successful designer founded her company of stylish handbags in 2004 and gradually expanded to footwear in 2006 when she opened a retail boutique in East Hampton. In 2009 she unveiled her first ready-to-wear line and opened a Madison Avenue Flagship store. She left her successful namesake company as CEO and creative director, but still owns a portion of the company and will remain on the board, while having severed ties with day-to-day operations.
