Two Austrian Companies are Apple Suppliers

For the first time apple published a list of its suppliers. Two leading Austrian companies from Styria are among them AT&S and Austria Micro Systems are among them. Both companies are not allowed to give any sort of details about the cooperation. Discretion is very important for Apple.

“Pina”, “Raju” and Lisy meeting Oscar

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has announced the nominations for the 84th Annual Academy Awards of Merit. Wim Wenders’ “Pina” leads another strong year for German talent. “It is fantastic to be nominated in the category of Best Documentary a second time after “Buena Vista Social Club,” specially as it is the first time for a 3D film to be granted that honor,” the filmmaker said. “All the dancers and collaborators of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, together with the crew and the production company Neue Road Movies, are extremely proud of this.”

In addition to its worldwide box office in 22 countries totaling $16 million to-date, “Pina” already received numerous German and European honors, including the best European Documentary Film Award, the Deutsche Filmpreis for Best Documentary Film, as well as the German Documentary Prize. Recently, Wim Wenders himself was honored with the Bavarian Film Prize’s Life Achievement Award. He was also nominated by the Writers Guild of America (West) in the category Best Documentary Screenplay and received a nomination for the BAFTA Awards in Great Britain in the category Best Foreign Language Film.

As Germany’s official submission, “Pina” had also qualified in the latter category reaching the short list of nine finalists. Among the five final nominees, Germany can take pride in co-producing Agnieszka Holland’s harrowing Holocaust drama “In Darkness” with Canada and submitting country Poland. Providing Berlin and Leipzig locations, Schmidtz Katze Filmkollektiv and Studio Babelsberg also brought in German actors Benno Führmann and Maria Schrader, to name but two. Five German state and federal media organizations provided additional funding.

For “Raju,” their thesis film at Hamburg Film School with support from Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein, director Max Zähle and producer Stefan Gieren received a nomination as Best Short Feature – Live Action. The 24 minute drama revolves about a German couple that adopted a young boy from an orphanage in Kolkata, India. When he disappears, “they realize that their eagerness to help is not the solution, but in fact part of the problem itself,” German Films noted. “Raju” screened at numerous festivals, including Max Ophüls Festival Saarbrücken 2011, Valencia (Spain), Aspen, Col. and Palm Springs, Calif. At the 2011 LA Shorts Fest 2011, “Raju” was deemed Best Foreign Film. In addition earning the top prize at the Angelus Student Film Festival 2011, the film also received the Honorary Student Academy Award 2011 in Bronze. Since 2000, there have been a total of six Oscar nominations and two Oscars for German shorts, “Quiero Ser” by Florian Gallenberger and “Toyland” by Jochen Alexander Freydank.

Last but not least, Lisy Christl was nominated for her Costume Design for Roland Emmerich’s Shakespeare mystery “Anonymous” (co-produced by Vierzehnte Babelsberg Film GmbH Produktion, Berlin). Christl, who began her career working in the wardrobe department for Joseph Vilsmaier’s “Stalingrad” in 1993, has several Foreign Language Oscar candidates on her resume, including “Brother of Sleep”, “Caché (Hidden)” and “John Rabe”. This nomination comes on the heals of Christl’s designer colleagues being honored with mentions from the Art Directors Guild for their work on “Anonymous.”

The 84th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, 26 February 2012 at Hollywood & Highland Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live in more than 25 countries.

Austrian Author Michael Stavaric wins

Austrian author Michael Stavaric with Czech roots was awarded this year’s Adelbert von Chamisso Prize – “a literary prize awarded by Robert Bosch Stiftung since 1985 to non-German authors writing in the German language”.
The winner of the prestigious “Ingeborg Bachman Prize” also worked in the US, in New York and New Jersey as a fellow of the Max Kade Foundation and Rutgers University.

Oscar-Winner Jochen Alexander Freydank to shoot for Disney

The Hollywood Reporter announces that successful German director Jochen Alexander Freydank will give his feature film debut adapting the romantic comedy best-seller “Macho Man” for Walt Disney Germany. It’s the story of a sensitive German guy, who tries to be a macho to land a sexy Turkish girl. Disney Germany will release the local-language comedy in 2013.

Jochen Alexander Freydank worked continuously in Germany, most recently he directed the episode “Heimatfront” for the classic German TV-Series “Tatort”. The East-Berlinborn director won an Academy Award in 2009 for his film “Toyland”

Sandra Bullock – The German sausage smuggler!

America’s sweetheart recently made a surprise statement on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno admitting to some illegal “sausage trafficking” in order to have her favorite German dish for Christmas.

Sandra Bullock who was born to a German mother and grew up in Germany until she was 13, apparently still cherishes some traditions that her late mother introduced to the family. Christmas Eve dinner without sauerkraut, German potato salad, and German sausages would just not be the same, Bullock explained recently during her appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The only problem is, it’s illegal to smuggle them into the country.

“Since my mother passed away, we break the law, because we have to manage to smuggle German sausages into the country, and apparently bringing meats across the waters is against the law,” she explained.

The actress, promoting her newest film Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close on The Tonight Show, said she asked family members in Germany to send her her favorite sausages. “We just have to break the law a little bit, but eventually someone’s package gets through,” she said.

Well, here’s our tip for Sandy so that she does not have to break the law anymore:

While in California, she should try the sausages available at TipTopMeats in Carlsbad or Continental Gourmet Sausage in Glendale, or when spending time in New York, Schaller & Weber in Manhattan will certainly have the sausages she likes best. I bought all my wooden ornaments there. And I’ve ordered Lebkuchen!” – We wish everybody a Happy Holiday Season and, as Sandra Bullock would say: Frohe Weihnachten!

Beer Gardens become popular in California

As the LA Times writes, the German tradition of Beer Gardens do become popular in Southern California:

Although some follow German tradition, many of the establishments in the Los Angeles area have interpreted old-fashioned beer gardens through the prism of local diversity and hipness.

Lederhosen aren’t required, but new German-influenced beer gardens are popping up in Southern California.

A few are closely patterned after the traditional biergartens that originated in 19th century Bavaria to serve plebeian brews in outdoor settings.

But many of the establishments in the Los Angeles area have interpreted old-fashioned beer gardens through the prism of local diversity and hipness. They serve a variety of foods, including Asian fusion, and microbrews that are hardly populist.

Even the downtown Standard hotel — a destination for hipsters — opened a beer garden on its roof this month, featuring blond woods and servers with T-shirts screen-printed to resemble the suspenders of traditional lederhosen and the blouses of dirndl costumes.

“At the Standard, the beer garden may seem sleek, but it’s also really both authentic and rather simple, if not rustic,” said hotel owner Andre Balazs, who had already put a beer garden in his Standard in New York.

The fare at the Standard bar might include traditional items such as sausages, pretzels and strudel, but they were planned by chef Kurt Gutenbrunner, a favorite with New York foodies.

The real attraction of beer gardens, no matter what they serve, could be the outdoor, convivial setting.

“The whole spirit of the European beer garden is very much of community and playfulness,” Balazs said. “It’s an experience that’s translatable everywhere.”
