Mai 2013.

Relativity Media engagierten Lasse Hallstrom („Chocolat“, „My Life as a Dog“), um die von Dana Stevens („City of Angels“) adaptierte Fassung des Romans „Safe Haven“ zu inszenieren.

Pardon this outburst from an unreconstructed German monarchist: Scanning the Internet for news about the impending royal wedding has rendered me envious, morose and frustrated. Never mind the uncomprehending sniggers by Bill O’Reilly about this display of allegedly antiquated glamour. O’Reilly might have many merits but he does not grasp the need for glamour in this era of vulgarity and triviality every one of his T.V. shows so aptly portrays night after night.

Being German, I am keenly aware of the dearth of glamour that has marked my country for almost a century. In church we have surly preachers in black robes opining from the pulpit about separating garbage instead of chanting the rich Lutheran liturgy and joyfully proclaiming the Gospel. In academia, colorful commencement proceedings have been abolished; graduates are told to pick up their diplomas in the Admin Building, room 312/A, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. In affairs of state, we are represented not by Kaisers or Kings with spiked helmets but grey-clad presidents; some of these have been impressive, I admit, but glamorous they were not. Recently, one of our heads of state just walked off the job like a peeved bookkeeper; compare that with the iron self discipline of Queen Elizabeth II who has just turned 85 and never missed a single workday in the 58 years of her reign.

What galls me most is that royal ceremonies in neighboring countries, in Britain, Luxembourg, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Monaco or Spain, are all implicitly German affairs because the blue blood in the veins of at least one of the players is our blue blood – German blood. The German yellow press reports every minutiae of these events while missing the central point: A little more of this kind of style in our own country would insert a modicum of elegance into our political and societal discourse, which is even more annoying than its American equivalent because we tend to systematize everything, including imported bad taste.

U.S. Senator Boxer: Evacuating 50 mile radius around California nuclear plants would mean moving 7.5 million people.

Japans quake went like a jolt through the European politics. Politicians that at least some time, not only rule with common sense, but also listen to what the people really want. Austria’s Environment Minister (where is the US ministry for environment and sustainability?) motioned that all European nuclear power plants undergo a “stress test”.
So far nuclear power was a national issue and always a touchy one within the EU.
Some countries, e.g. France rely heavily on nuclear power. Three quarters of French power is nuclear.
And no matter what politicians say, nuclear is anything else but clean, because the depleted uranium is highly toxic. France stores it in Le Havre and underground and sent thousands of nuclear waste to Russia.
Austria is one of the few countries that has a nuclear power plant, Zwentendorf, but after a referendum never went operational. Wonder if in the US people will ever be asked about essential questions like do you want to have a nuclear power plant in a tsunami / earthquake are or not?
Now nature has reclaimed the area and the plant is used for spare parts. The plant is similar to the one if Fukushima which went online in 1971. Pictures of what it looks like inside Zwentendorf, which is used for training purposes and for spare parts. Slide show.

Germanys Chancellor Angela Merkel reacted right away, she said that the Japanese apocalypse is a “turning point in the history of the industrial world,”.
She is reconsidering putting the plan for a nuclear free Germany by 2022 back in place and Germany is switching off 7 power plants built before 1980!
That is only 31 years… California’s San Onofre and San Luis Obispo plants are about a decade older. And on top of it they are in like Japan’s Fukushima in earthquake zones and close to the ocean.
There are different news reports about how high the wall to the ocean really is and if it is build for a 6.5 earthquake or a bit higher, but regardless. Fact is the plants are old. Japan spent a lot more on earthquake security than e.g. California does. And nobody predicted that the Japanese earthquake would be do violent and a 9 causing a tsunami.
Do we need a more vivid reminder about how utterly helpless we are in face of such a tragedy, than the pictures that flood the news right now?
Three of the four corners of the pacific plates had catastrophic quakes recently. The US West Coast is the remaining corner. Maybe it is time to take this more seriously.
Maybe it is time to switch off the aging plants and find another solution.

Even Venezuela halts its nuclear plans. Only the official US response is not re-thinking, but checking the safety a bit and then probably once the media storm is over doing business as usual, because business, not common sense or safety is what rules this country. Pretty likely we, the people, will go ahead and build more plants, at least the ones that were suggested by the while house a while ago as a “clean” alternative. But maybe we can continue to dream; this is the country where your dreams come true, that the US will re-think its energy policy.

The US is so way behind, when it comes to protecting citizens and listening to what the people want. Which is for sure not living close to an over 40 year old power plant or to have new lethal plants that man cannot control in case of emergency.

Official statements are ridden with un-precise statements and with phrases like: “As safe as humanly possible“ which ironically the point, a tsunami or an earthquake are not human, it is Mother Nature showing us her force.

There is a petition to ask president Obama to take action and if not turn plants off, at least put plants to build new ones on hold.

But is all that enough? There is no real anti atomic movement, nobody standing up and making politicians rethink not to put a single tax dollar into non-renewable energies from this day on. To rethink, rebuild, reengineer and finally respect Mother Nature and stop abusing her.
Maybe it is time for citizens to step up and make their voices heard. After all it is all of us who will have his or her food poisoned and who will suffer from potential radiation poisoning that no human being will be able to protect us from in case of emergency.

It is high-time for the mighty USA to step up, when it comes to sustainable energy
If Germany can do it, so can we!

Angela Merkel mentioning her oath and that it is her duty to protect citizens. All German nuclear plants will be tested, seven will go offline for that period of time and might never go online again.
Where is president Obama taking action, why aren’t San Luis Obispo and San Onofre officially tested and it is even considered to turn them off while we still can?

Merry Christmas and Best Wishes for 2011!

Dear German World Visitors,

Christmas is just a few days away and a year of great challenges, pleasant surprises and new endeavors is coming to a close.

A personal highlight for me this year was my participation in the German Language Conference in Minnesota this summer hosted by Concordia Language Villages and co-sponsored by the Goethe Institut Chicago and the German Embassy. Another highlight was this year’s Steuben Parade that was able to welcome new supporters like the German TV station Deutsche Welle as well as the information about the new initiative to start a German-American caucus in the US Congress. And last, but not least, our own 10-Year-Anniversary Party in December ended the year with a bang. The survival of a magazine in these economical challenging times is a miracle in itself. This miracle has been accomplished by the German-American community and friends of the German language and culture.

In whatever way you are connected to German World – be it as one of our advertisers, or as a subscriber, or as a sponsor of our events, or as a visitor to our website – I’d like to thank you on behalf of our entire team for your interest in German World and your support throughout the year.

In 2011 German World will continue its efforts to promote German as a foreign language in the US and to interconnect various groups within the German, Austrian- and Swiss-American community even closer.

Our latest event, the German World 10th Anniversary Party in Los Angeles, brought an exciting new mix of people together and created new synergies. We are looking forward to creating more networking opportunities in 2011 for you.

German World Magazine will continue to be published quarterly. Additional news reports are weekly updated on our website www.german-world.com.

However, please remember, we cannot do it without your support. Every single subscription, every advertisement ensures that we will be able to keep the only German-English magazine in the US alive.

Merry Christmas and best wishes for a healthy and happy new year!

Sincerely yours,

Finally!
First Initiatives To Give Political Voice to German-American Community

Have you noticed, dear reader, how many German surnames appear in American politics? I am thinking of US Secretary of Treasurer Timothy F. Geithner and the recently elected new Speaker of the House John A. Boehner, as well as the countless German surnames among representatives and senators such as Heidepriem, Daschle, Ehrlich, Shuster and Gerlach. But do these politicians give the German-American community any political influence in the USA? So far, definitely not. Even though Germany is America’s most important partner in Europe, has the third largest economy in the world, and although 43 million Americans, according to the 2000 Census, are of German descent and are thus the largest ethnic minority in the USA, Germany plays no role in the US media and politics. Even a visit by German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Los Angeles was covered by the LA Times with a mere photo and a two-line text.

The opening of the first national German-American Heritage Museum in Washington DC in March of this year put German-Americans in the limelight for the first time, with a focus on their history and their achievements.

And slowly, we are seeing what looks like a new trend in American politics, too. Not only did John A. Boehner talk openly about his German descent in a TV
interview with Diane Sawyer, Jim Gerlach from Pennsylvania has recently issued an initiative for creating a German-American caucus in the US Congress.
At a gala event of the German Society of Pennsylvania on October 3 commemorating the 20th anniversary of German reunification he spoke in detail about his plans: “My growing awareness of my family’s German roots and the rich German heritage in my Congressional District has led me to take actions in the House of Representatives to foster a greater appreciation of and fortify the German-American connection. (….) The Caucus will be an informal, bipartisan group of Members of Congress dedicated to maintaining and strengthening the relationship between the US and Germany. It will highlight our current economic ties with Germany and draw attention to the German-American heritage and achievements German-Americans have made in building the United States. The House already has well-established caucuses focused on issues with India, Pakistan, Switzerland, Mexico, and Albania to name a few. I believe it well past time to establish one focusing on the German-American experience.”

Don’t you think that it is finally time to honor the achievements of German-Americans in building and developing the United States of America?
Jim Gerlach has already found support from the nonprofit organizations German American Business Council, German American Coalition and German American Heritage Foundation. I hope that many members of the US Congress from both parties will listen to and follow Jim Gerlach’s request. After all, Germany is still America’s most important partner. Reason enough for a sufficient number of American politicians to step forward and help launch this caucus, either because of their German descent or their interest in Germany and Europe.
