David Hasselhoff in Austria

In case you are not following David Hasselhoff on Twitter, you might have missed that he went to Austria and Germany. The two countries, where he is popular with a certain viewership, that showed him and his singing career more love than others.

The 58-year old. who according to the Guiness Book of Records is the most seen TV-star ever, will dance on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. Maybe he should petition to have Austria and Germany vote too, then his chances to win the coveted mirror ball trophy might really good.

Vom 21. bis 25. Juli fand im kalifornischen San Diego die Comic-Con statt. Kein Wunder also, daß sich die Ankündigungen von Kult- und Comicthemen häuften.

Nachdem Eddie Murphy bereits 2003 die gleichnamige Erlebnisparkattraktion beleben sollte, hat Disney nun Guillermo del Toro für “The Haunted Mansion” engagiert. Unter Berufung auf dunkle Disney-Figuren wie die Schwiegermutter von „Schneewittchen“ werde er „Mansion“ zum verfluchten Haus der nächsten Generation machen, versprach der Regisseur von „Cronos“, „Pan’s Labyrinth“ und „Hellboy“.

“Spider-Man” und “Evil Dead”-Meister Sam Raimi inszeniert und koproduziert „Earp: Saint for Sinners“ für DreamWorks, Radical Studios, Mandeville und seine Firma Star Road Entertainment. Die grafische Novelle ist eine moderne, in Las Vegas angesiedelte Weiterentwicklung des Westernhelden Wyatt Earp. Raimi soll auch die „Oz, the Great and Powerful” betitelte Vorgeschichte über den legendären „Wizard of Oz” (1939) übernehmen. Nach dem Milliardenerfolg von „Alice in Wonderland“ wollen Disney und Produzent Joe Roth nämlich wieder einen Regisseur mit Vision engagieren.

Für DreamWorks wird Tim Burton die Entwicklung des von Matt Wilson geschaffenen Brettspiels “Monsterpocalypse” übernehmen. Roy Lee („The Departed”, “The Ring”, “How to Train Your Dragon”) und Richard Zanuck (“Dark Shadows”, Filmecho 30/2010) produzieren, John August (“Big Fish”, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”) verfasst das Drehbuch und Ken Ralston („Forrest Gump”, “Death Becomes Her”, “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” und “Alice”) übernimmte die visuellen Effekte.

Dem britischen Pilotenhelden „Dan Dare” folgen Warner Bros. und der designierte Hauptdarsteller Sam Worthington ins Weltall. Basil Iwanyk (“Clash of the Titans”, „The Town“) und Dan Lin („Sherlock Holmes”, „Terminator: Salvation“) produziert den in den 50er Jahren begonnen Comic über Thunder Road Entertainment. Mit seiner Firma Full Clip Prods. schloß Worthington eine Vereinbarung mit dem zuvor erwähnten Verleger Radical Studios als Ideenlieferant und Entdecker für Comics mit Filmpotenzial.

Der Regisseur von “My Bloody Valentine 3D” unterstrich mit einem Clip von dem ähnlich passend betitelten „Drive Crazy 3D“ (Summit Ent.) das Potenzial der dritten Dimension. Patrick Lussier hatte ausserdem Nicolas Cage nach San Diego mitgebracht, der ja bereits in “Gone in 60 Seconds” aufs Gaspedal drückte.

Neben seiner Tätigkeit als Produzent (Plan B) wird Brad Pitt bei der apokalyptischen Zombiegeschichte „World War Z” nun auch noch die Hauptrolle unter Marc Foster („Quantum of Solace“, „The Kite Flyer“ ) übernehmen, bestätigte Autor Max Brooks auf der Comic-Con. Paramount habe ausserdem die Rechte an seinen „Zombie Survival Guide“-Büchern erworben, so der Sohn von Anne Bancroft und Mel Brooks weiter.

Während „World War X” kommen für Warner Bros. und Silver Pictures derweil zeitreisende Terroristen aus der Zukunft zum Einsatz und in „Infected“ weitere Zombies für die Indie-Produzenten von Verdi-Corrente („American Buffalo“). Michael Madsen (“Sin City”) und Peter Facinelli (Carlkile Cullen in “The Twilight Saga”) spielen die Hauptrollen.

Mark Protosevich, der das Drehbuch zu “I Am Legend” verfasste und an dem von “Thor” mitwirkte, macht mit “Freakshow” seine nächste Comic-Adaption. Der Dreiteiler um fünf junge Mutanten erscheint ab Januar bei Ape Entertainment. Protosevich produziert mit Sheldon Turner („Up in the Air“, “Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning”) und Jennifer Klein (“Charlie Chan”).

Demi Moore and Austrian leeches

Demi Moore is 47, but certainly does not look like it. So what are her secrets? Well one of them is Austrian. She admitted to talk show host David Letterman a while back that:
“I was in Austria doing a cleanse and part of the treatment was leech therapy. These aren’t just swamp leeches though – we are talking about highly trained medical leeches. I feel like I’ve always been someone looking for the cutting edge of things that optimize your health and healing.
They have a little enzyme that when they are biting down in you it gets released in your blood and generally you bleed for quite a bit – and your health is optimized.”

Leech therapy which has a long history in ancient Egyptian, doctors there once considered them a cure-all is today sometimes used in plastic and reconstructive surgery to assist reattachment of severed body parts. It is as follows: First, shave your body and then immerse yourself in turpentine. And when the stinging stops, allow leeches to feast on your blood.

August Diehl plays Angelina’s husband

The best American action heroes like Jason Bourne and now Evelyn Salt, have doting German spouses. Matt Damon had Franka Potente and now Angelina Jolie got one of Germany’s most talented actors August Diehl to love her so much that she more or less gets “reprogrammed by love”.

But how did the terrific actor get the part in an international blockbuster, without having a major US agent placing him there? It can’t really be because Angelina Jolie herself (born as Voight from the German Name Vogt wanted to go back to her roots), right? Well it certainly does not hurt to have the star’s husband in your corner.
NBC Local Media’s PopCornBix reported that none other than Brad Pitt helped with the casting, he said what a strong actor August Diehl was. And that they were looking for someone with no baggage, a fresh face – to keep the audience off guard. August Diehl starred alongside Pitt in Quentin Tarantino’s hit movie ‘Inglourious Basterds’.
Speaking about the German actor’s appearance in that film, Brad Pitt elaborates: “Yes, he was quite ruthless in Basterds. But if you’re wearing a swastika emblem that gave you a lot of power… He’s just a great actor.”

Bono: I’m ready, rebuilt by German engineering

As German World Magazine reported U2 lead singer Bono was hospitalized in Germany in June.

Now the band announced on their website u2.com that they are coming back.

The famous singer announced: “I’m ready, rebuilt by German engineering. Better design, I’m told.”

Bono elaborates: “I’m very well. I can sit. I can stand. I can move around a bit. Feeling strong, feeling confident, know what I’m saying?
I actually wanted to apologize for the trouble that this injury has put you all through and those of you that bought tickets and organized hotels and travel plans, it’s a very big deal…we don’t take you for granted. It was not a lot of fun for me, the injury was quite serious.”

Rapper tries to rent whole country

Hilarious, Rapper Snoop Dogg tried to rent the entire country of Liechtenstein to shoot his video. The tiny country with a population of 35.000 has beautiful spots to shoot a video and Snoop Dogg wanted them all.

Liechtenstein property agent Karl Schwärzler, “We’ve had requests for places and villages but never one to hire the whole country before. It would have been possible, but Snoop Dogg’s management did not give us enough time.”

Rob Minkoff (“Chinese Odyssey”, “The Forbidden Kingdom”, “The Lion King”, “Stuart Little”) inszeniert die Geschichte eines doppelten Banküberfalls derzeit in Louisiana. Die Rechte für Deutschland und Österreich liegen bei Telepool.

New Line Cinema stellt Jennifer Aniston in „Horrible Bosses“ an die Seite von Jason Bateman, Colin Farrell und Charlie Day („Going the Distance“). Nach seinem Erfolg mit „Four Christmases“ inszeniert Seth Gordon das Drehbuch um drei Freunde, die ihren Arbeitgeber abservieren wollen. Die Folgen wurden als Desaster im Stile von „Throw Mama From the Train“ beschrieben.

Martin Sheen, Stephen Moyer („True Blood“), Stana Katic („Quantum of Solace“) und Odette Yustman („Cloverfield“) übernehmen weitere Parts in dem Thriller “The Double”. Richard Gere und Topher Grace spielen FBI Agenten, die den Mörder eines Senatoren jagen. Mit Michael Brandt, der seine Regiedebut macht, und Derek Haas wird das Autorenteam von u. a. „Wanted“, „3:10 to Yuma“ und „2 Fast 2 Furious“ erneut tätig.

Ron Nyswaner („Philadelphia”, „The Painted Veil”) adaptiert den Dokumentarkurzfilm und Oscar-Gewinner „Freehold” (2007) zu einem Spielfilm mit Ellen Page (“Juno”, „Inception“) in einer der Hauptrollen. Im Zentrum steht eine Polizistin, die für die Pensionsanrechte ihrer Lebenspartnerin kämpfen muß.

In dem Indiethriller “Catch .44” tritt Bruce Willis als Verbrecherboss an die Seite von Forest Whitaker, der einen psychopathischer Killer mimt. Debutregisseur Aaron Harvey inszeniert sein eigenes Drehbuch um drei Frauen, angeführt von der Schwedin Malin Åkerman („Couples Retreat“, Silk Spectre in „Watchmen“).

Fox engagierte Shawn Levy (“Night at the Museum”, “Date Night”) und seine Firma 21 Laps als Produzenten für die familienorientierte Weihnachtskomödie “The Fight Before Christmas” von Adam Sztykiel (“Due Date”). Als Regisseur arbeitet Levy an der Roboter-Boxgeschichte “Real Steel” für DreamWorks.

Warner Bros. buchte “Sherlock 2” für Mitte Dezember 2011 mit dem bewährten Team aus Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams und Guy Ritchie. Der Reboot spielte am letzten Weihnachtstag 62,3 und insgesamt 209 Millionen Dollar in Nordamerika ein.

Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere und Rory Culkin treten in “Scream 4” für Produzent und Regisseur Wes Craven und Drehbuchautor Kevin Williamson an die Seite der Originalbesetzung Neve Campbell, David Arquette und Courteney Cox.

James McAvoy („Atonement“, “Wanted”) spielt in der “X-Men” Vorgeschichte “First Class” den jungen Professor X. Charles Xavier wurde bislang von Patrick Stewart verkörpert. Matthew Vaughn inszeniert nach einer Originalidee von Bryan Singer (“X-Men”, “X2”), der zusammen mit Lauren Shuler Donner und Simon Kinberg für einen Kinostart am 3. Juni 2011 produziert.

Mit den Produzenten Julia Roberts (Red Om Films) und Kevin Townsend’ (Science + Fiction) im Rücken wird Shekhar Kapur („Elizabeth“) die Geschichte von George Mallory inszenieren. Matthew Faulk und Mark Skeet („Vanity Fair“) verfassten das Drehbuch um den englischen Forscher, der 1924 beim Erklimmen des Mount Everest spurlos verschwand.

Get them to the cinema

Während sich „Get Him to the Greek“ seit Wochen recht gut in den U.S. Charts halten kann, buchten die an der Chaos-Komödie beteiligten Talente zwei neue Projekte. Produzent Judd Apatow (“40-Year Old Virgin”) und Universal Studios sicherten sich Jennifer Aniston und Paul Rudd für die Komödie „Wanderlust“. Rudd arbeitete an einer Neufassung des Drehbuchs um ein Paar, das einer Kommune beitritt nachdem es sein Geld verloren hat, zusammen mit Autor Ken Marino und Regisseur David Wain, der mit Rudd bereits „Role Models“ gemacht hat.

Russell Brand (unser Foto via Getty Images), der für Warner Bros. die Hauptrolle in dem Remake von „Arthur“ (1981) übernimmt, bekommt derweil nette Begleitung. Neben Helen Mirren und Greta Gerwig („Greenberg“, „Baghead“) übernimmt Nick Nolte die Rolle des Millionärs, der seine von Jennifer Garner darzustellende Tochter mit Arthur verkuppeln will. Das neue Drehbuch stammt von Peter Baynham, der „Borat“ und „Bruno“ mitgeschrieben hat. Jason Winer, dessen “Modern Family” ein Komödienhit zur Hauptsendezeit geworden ist, macht sein Spielfilmdebut.

L.A.’s German accent

In the 1930s and ’40s, German and Austrian emigres brought intellect, wit and Freudian theory to what was then a pretty staid place. Today, Germans are still a presence but are more disparate.

At one time, Los Angeles was Weimar on the Pacific: Numerous German-speaking émigrés put their stamp on the city to which they’d fled.

What with directors such as Billy Wilder and Ernst Lubitsch, writers such as Thomas Mann and Bertolt Brecht, and assorted film composers and actors — many of whom gathered to express their love of German high culture and their hatred of fascism — it seemed at times that the Southland’s intellectual life was conducted in German.

Despite the stereotype of the German as introverted and painfully cerebral, the scene was lively: Lavish Westside homes as well as parks, gyms and beer gardens were filled with exiles who’d come to California because their ethnicity or politics had provoked threats or loss of citizenship.

Today, things are different. “There are several areas where many German people live,” says Christina Baitzel, who moved to the U.S. a decade ago and now works for Los Angeles Opera. “But I don’t think they really connect to each other.”

The German presence in L.A. — the exiles in paradise and the more disparate contemporary scene — has a renewed resonance these days, as the city’s cultural organizations observe the Ring Festival LA (www.ringfestivalla.com/), which accompanies the opera’s rollout of Richard Wagner’s “Ring” cycle.

Los Angeles has a few German institutions and some people who follow the nation’s music and letters. But it’s not a community, says Cornelius Schnauber, a retired USC professor who is an eminent chronicler of German-language culture.

“In general, the Germans have never been a people who want to stick together when in foreign countries,” he says. “It’s different from Russian people or Asian people. In general, they’re more assimilated: It was true before the exile period and true after the exile period.”

The Southland’s German roots can still be hard to find. On the surface, the Austrian impact may be easier to spot in 21st century L.A., whether the modern architecture of Neutra and Schindler, the post-Cold War politics of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger or the cuisine of Wolfgang Puck.

Despite a visibility that doesn’t compare to, say, Russians — whose voices are easy to overhear at classical concerts and operas — Germans have made their mark on Los Angeles and continue to do so today.

Historian Kevin Starr calls the influx of 200,000 German and Austrian refugees — about 10,000 of whom settled around L.A. — “the most complete migration of artists and intellectuals in European history.”

His book “The Dream Endures: California Enters the 1940s,” chronicles some of their highs and lows, as they brought a culture of intellectualism, verbal wit, sexual freedom, Freudian theory and in some cases heavy drug and alcohol use to a city still essentially Midwestern Protestant. In 1930s and ’40s L.A., a figure like Marlene Dietrich was considered a serious exotic.
