Chancellor Merkel in the US for Nuclear Summit
The Nuclear Security Summit in Washington will kick off German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s five-day trip to the United States. US President Barack Obama has invited over 40 heads of state and government to consultations on guarding against unsecured nuclear material. Merkel will travel on to California on Tuesday evening.
During the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union faced each other as the world’s two military superpowers in a constantly shifting “balance of terror.” The world has been meaningfully transformed since the Iron Curtain fell in Europe two decades ago.
Last year in Prague, President Obama called for a world without nuclear weapons. Now, the US Administration has presented its new nuclear strategy, according to which the US will forgo development of new atomic weapons.
Almost exactly one year to date since his speech in Prague, President Obama, along with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, last week signed a new START agreement, again in Prague.
