World Premiere of ENCOUNTERS by Austrian Composer

Austrian Composer Gernot Wolfgang’s ENCOUNTERS will celebrate its world premiere this Wednesday, March 10th 2010.
Violinist Sara Parkins and bassoonist Judith Farmer will perform the world premiere of ENCOUNTERS.
Also on the program will be Wolfgang Gernot’s piece for bassoon & contrabass, LOW AGENDA, which will be performed by Judith Farmer and contrabassist Nico Abondolo.
Bela Bartok’s “44 Duos” (selections), Francois Couperin’s “Duo for 2 Bass Instruments in G Major” and Tom Johnson’s “Failing – A very difficult piece for solo Double Bass” will round out the concert program.
This set will be followed by a performance by opera singer Rachel Staples and hang drum musician Bruce Cana Fox.

John Henken from the The Los Angeles Times called it:
” … a striking piano quartet by Gernot Wolfgang … His compelling solutions in Metamorphosis sounded neither forced nor artificial. At its core, the piece is a wild minor swing with Balkan Gypsy gestures and rhetoric.”

Moving, personal, acknowledging the other nominees, the role she won for and in an emotional moment her German mother Helga. She made us thoughtful, she made us cry and she made us laugh. At the Governor’s Ball

Did I really earn this or did I just wear you all down? I would like to thank the Academy for allowing me in the last month to have the most incredible ride with rooms full of artists that I see tonight and that I’ve worked with before and I hope to work with in the future, who inspire me and blaze trails for us. Four of them that I’ve fallen deeply in love with I share this night with and I share this award with.

Gabby, I love you so much. You are exquisite. You are beyond words to me. Carey, your grace and your elegance and your beauty and your talent makes me sick. Helen, I feel like we are family through family and I don’t have the words to express just what I think of you. And Meryl, you know what I think of you and you are such a good kisser.

I have so many people to thank for my good fortune in this lifetime and this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, I know. To the family that allowed me to play them, the Tuohy family, I know they’re in here and you’ll probably hear her in a minute. Maybe not. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to… the family that made this film that gave me the opportunity to do something different. John Lee Hancock, Gil Netter, Alcon, Warner Bros., the actors, everyone who’s shown me kindness when it wasn’t fashionable, I thank you. To everyone who was mean to me when it wasn’t… George Clooney threw me in a pool years ago. I’m still holding a grudge. But there’s so many people to thank.

Not enough time, so I would like to thank what this film is about for me which are the moms that take care of the babies and the children no matter where they come from. Those moms and parents never get thanked. I, in particular, failed to thank one. So… if I can take this moment to thank Helga B. for not letting me ride in cars with boys until I was 18 because she was right. I would’ve done what she said I was gonna do. For making me practice every day when I got home. Piano, ballet, whatever it is I wanted to be. She said to be an artist, you had to practice every day, and for reminding her daughters that there’s no race, no religion, no class system, no color, nothing, no sexual orientation that makes us better than anyone else. We are all deserving of love. So, to that trailblazer, who allowed me to have that. And this. And this. I thank you so much for this opportunity that I share with these extraordinary women and my lover Meryl Streep. Thank you.

Regardless if you love Sandra Bullock, the Superstar with German roots, you have to give it to her: She really has humor. When she was nominated for the Annual Razzie award for the worst performance of the year, aswell as an Oscar, granted for different projects, but within the same year, she did not snub the award show, but said: Sure if I win, I’ll come! The preparations to the world’s largest movie award gala are in full swing on March 4, 2010. German World takes you behind the scenes to Hollywood Boulevard which has been blocked from traffic at Highland Avenue since March 1, 2010. Where hundreds of celebrities will soon stroll along to the cheers of the onlookers, all Oscar statues are still wrapped and the red carpet is covered in plastics on March 4, 2010.

Gloria Pink

After checking out the set-up area, we stopped at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce on Hollywood Boulevard for its annual open house supported by businesses of the Hollywood community. One of them is Gloria Pink, owner of “Pink’s Famous Chili Dogs”, the famous hot dog joint on La Brea Avenue that has become one of Los Angeles’ landmarks. Gloria whose parents started the business in 1939 told German World that Germany’s most famous TV show host , Thomas Gottschalk, once shot a scene for one of his productions at “Pink’s” and became one of her customers. Celebrities like Sandra Bullock, John Malkovich, and Richard Dreyfuss also belong to Pink’s regulars, standing in line just like anybody else. Dreyfuss always comes in for a “Mild Polish Hot Dog with mustard, kraut, fries and a coke”. We tried Pink’s signature “Chilli Hot Dog” and simply loved it.

It was literally rubbing shoulders with the rich and beautiful at Villa Aurora on March 6, 2010, when the German and Austrian community came together in order to celebrate the Oscar nominations of Austrian actor Christoph Waltz (“Inglourious Basterds”), director Michael Haneke (“Das Weisse Band”), cinematographer Christian Berger (Best Camera for “Das Weisse Band”), director Michael Hoffmann (“The Last Station”), Bartek Konopka and Piotr Rosolowski (“Rabbit A La Berlin”). The reception was hosted by “German Films”, Villa Aurora, the Consulate General and the Goethe Institut in Los Angeles and supported by Audi, the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg GmbH, Mitteldeutsche Medienfoerderung, Volvic and Carpe Diem. Among the guests who were welcomed by Villa Aurora’s new director Imogen von Tannenberg and “German Films”’ Oliver Mahrdt, we also saw Yaron Shani, director and writer of the Israeli Oscar contender “Ajami”, co-produced by Studio Babelsberg and competing against “Das Weisse Band” for the Oscar of “Best Foreign Language Film”. “It was a very pleasant experience”, Yaron Shani told German World, “to work with the team of Studio Babelsberg. It was great to have such a strong and experienced partner.”
Due to the rainy weather in Los Angeles, the reception could only take place inside of the Villa Aurora, and due to the many German and Austrian Oscar nominees this year, the media attention from Germany was extraordinary. More than 400 guests who were brought from the shuttle stop to the villa by a shiny, white Audi TDI Diesel fleet, TV crews of ZDF, ARD, ProSieben, RTL and SAT.1 as well as representatives of Spiegel online, Bunte, dpa, Berliner Zeitung, Kronenzeitung and many more packed the relatively small premises of the Villa Aurora. Even guests of honor like Leonie Benesch and Christian Friedel (starring in “The White Ribbon) and cinematographer Christian Berger (“The White Ribbon”) could hardly reach the welcome area to be introduced to the guests. Among them were German film producer Bernd Eichinger and his wife, the German actors Moritz Bleibtreu (“The Baader Meinhof Komplex”) and Clemens Schick (“Casino Royale”; “Unschuldig”), Leonie Benesch and Christian Friedel (starring in “The White Ribbon), cinematographer Christian Berger, Juergen Prochnow (“Das Boot”), and winner of “Germany’s Next Top Model” Sara Nuru.

German Center for Research and Innovation – DWIH opens in New York

On February 19 a new home for both German and American students, scientists, and industry professionals was created in New York. The German Center for Research & Innovation (DWIH Deutsches Wissensafts- und Innovationshaus), a new organization designed to strengthen ties between German researchers and their American counterparts, was officially opened by visiting dignitaries and industry leaders, led by German cabinet minister for Education and Research, Dr. Annette Schavan.

“Let us build a new science partnership between Germany and the United States,” Minister Schavan said in her speech. “A partnership which is based on shared values and stands up for this common basis of values confidently in the world.”

Coming the day after Minister Schavan signed the first Science and Technology Agreement between the U.S. and Germany on February 18 in Washington D.C., the opening of the DWIH is another sign of German science reaching out to better engage the world. The DWIH concept was created by the German Foreign Office and Dr. Schavan’s Ministry of Education and Research, and will be administered jointly by the German Research Foundation (DFG Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst). Besides the New York office, there are plans to open similar offices of DWIH in Moscow, New Delphi, Sao Paulo, and Tokyo.

“It’s a one-stop shop,” Dr. Matthias Kleiner, president of DFG, said to describe the new center. “German science is very diverse, and this will be an opportunity for German scientists to present themselves. It will also be an address for young people to network and advance their research.”

German Ambassador to the U. S., Dr. Klaus Scharioth, spoke at length about the heritage of German and American cooperation, the similar problems each nation now faces, and the solutions that could be found through shared scientific support. “Exchange is of the essence,” he said. “The problems of the world are complex and can only be met if we work together closely.”

Other presenters at the DWIH opening included Dr. Horst Freitag, Consul General of Germany to the United Nations, Dr. Max Huber, vice president of the DAAD, and Madeleine Jacobs, executive director and ceo of the American Chemical Society.

Perhaps the most intriguing presentation of the afternoon was saved for last, and was given by MIT’s Dr. Wolfgang Ketterle. Well over six-feet tall, the 2001 Nobel laureate in physics spoke about one of the tiniest configurations of matter, the Bose-Einstein condensate. Long held to be merely theoretical until realized in Ketterle’s lab, the condensate reveals a startling property of matter when super-cooled, one which lends ordinary objects nearly magical abilities of electrical conductivity.

Asked if there were one main goal for the new German Center for Research & Innovation, Dr. Schavan said, “To bring people together who have a passion for research.”

The Swarovski Crystal Curtain with its proscenium arch framing the stage in sparkling clear, topaz and smoky brown hues the Austrian Crystal company makes an encore at the 2010 Oscars. The colors match designer David Rockwell’s color scheme white, platinum, bronze and gold.

“It has been fantastic to work on the Oscars again, particularly because we have been able to build and expand on so many of the design innovations we introduced last year,” said Rockwell. “It has been a thrill to work with Adam, Bill and the rest of the team, dreaming up sets that embrace all the reasons we love movies: the glamour, the lights, the colors, the technique and the emotion!”

Light and movement, the most basic components of moviemaking, will be integrated into this year’s sets to create an immersive, transformative environment. Rockwell Group has reprised one of the most dazzling elements of the 81st Academy Awards design – the Swarovski Crystal Curtain – but with new and unexpected features for an even greater theatrical effect. The overall design is intended to evoke a classic but modern glamour, with white, platinum, topaz and smoky bronze hues.

This year’s set also features three circular, revolving platforms that work in combination with rotating LED panels and architectural metalwork screens for film projection.

Paris Hilton bought shares of the company she used to promote: Rich Prosecco.

Based in the Austrian region of Tyrol owner Günther Aloys confirmed that the billionaire hotel heiress Paris Hilton will buy a stake in his sparkling wine firm.
She will buy a considerable amount of stock, but won’t have a say in how the company is run.

The company’s stock is traded in Frankfurt and sold in over 33 countries.
