New International Film Festival Founded in Arizona

The Arizona Center for Germanic Cultures (AC4GC) announces the founding of its new film festival, in partnership with Weecks Productions, LLC. The Zeitgeist Medien Fest (ZMF) International Film Festival will be held November 22-23 at Harkins Arrowhead in Peoria and is actively seeking film submissions. The festival’s official website is http://zfilmfest.org. The festival was created to celebrate Germanic influences on film and film-making techniques, as well as embracing the range of current technologies available to today’s filmmakers, as one might expect from a festival called Zeitgeist, a German term meaning “spirit of the times.”

Having a signature film festival was a project more than two years in the making for the Arizona Center for Germanic Cultures. “San Francisco and Los Angeles have had German film festivals for many years organized by the Goethe Institut,” says AC4GC President Dieter Bollmann. “But we don’t have a Goethe Institut in Arizona to partner with. Having our own film festival has been a strategic goal, because it fits with our mission to educate about and celebrate Germanic culture, and does so in a publicity-friendly and audience-driven way.”

Longtime family friend of Bollmann’s, Dan Weecks was chosen to serve as festival director, because of his long-standing connections in the local film and video production industries, and his passion to create a new kind of film festival. “Dan’s experience owning and managing a successful and well-known production business here in the Valley, along with his Germanic background and his energy and enthusiasm for the project made him a perfect choice to spearhead AC4GC’s inaugural Zeitgeist Medien International Film Festival,” says Bollmann.

The panel of festival judges includes Telly Award-winning screenwriter/director/producer Nitara Osbourne, SAE Institute Career Advisor for Vienna, Austria, Miriam Jonas, and Flicker Award-winner and iconic horror film actor Bill Oberst Jr. Zeitgeist Medien Fest Director and Co-Chairman Dan Weecks tapped Oberst, an American actor of German ancestry, to serve as a judge because of the actor’s frequently-expressed admiration for German cinema.

Oberst recently commented in MatchFlick.com, “As a son of Germany, I am proud to be a part of the judge’s panel for the Zeitgeist Medien Fest. While it is well-known that the cinematic genre I work in most often was virtually invented by German Expressionist filmmakers, the vast influence of Germanic culture and style on cinema in general has been less celebrated. I love working with German filmmakers, so Zeitgeist’s emphasis of Germanic ancestry and culture is something I am very interested in.”

The festival accepts entries in the following categories: Narrative, Short Film, Short Short Film (1-3 minutes), Music Video, Industrial, News Package, Commercial/PSA, TV Pilot, Film Trailer, Documentary, Animation, and Experimental. The submission deadline is September 13. The entry fee is $15, which was strategically set at a price point far lower than most film festivals to encourage broad participation, particularly by experimental and independent filmmakers.

Soccer Tornament: It Is Goal Time in Miami

The German American Business Chamber of South Florida invites everybody to either join or participate at a international soccer tournament organized by the British American Business Council Miami. It takes place on a mini-field, each team consists of seven players, and up to 5 substitutes.

There are three Team Categories: Mens Open, 35+ an Co-Eds. It starts on Saturday at 9 AM and will end at 4 PM. Lunch and Dinner are provided.

New Book About the Fight of Joplin Against Discrimination

When music publisher John Stark first heard Scott Joplin play his piano, he knew that ragtime was the music of hope for a new America. But Joplin would never be content with popularity and fame. Joplin committed himself to racial justice in the early 1900s. He was inspired by Booker T. Washington and the Dahomeyan defeat in West Africa. But due to this earnest pursuit, he was ignored by the masses for writing the music of Civil Rights fifty years before America was ready to listen.

King of Rags, by Professor Eric Bronson, is a historical fiction account of the quest for racial equality at the turn of the 20^th Century. Dr. Bronson takes a fresh and invigorating look at the tragic life of Scott Joplin and his fellow ragtime musicians as they frantically transformed the seedy and segregated underbelly of comedians, conmen and prostitutes who called Americas most vibrant cities home.

His story brings to light numerous interesting and little known historical discoveries about life in America including:

1. One hundred years before hip-hop star Ludacris was called a “corrupter” of morals, before Elvis was attacked for playing the devil’s music, ragtime musicians like Scott Joplin were criticized in the media for spoiling the innocent sensibilities of teenage boys and girls.

2. The father of the blues, W.C. Handy was influenced by ragtime musicians in St. Louis.

3. One hundred years before Barack Obama became America’s first African-American president, Joplin wrote an opera about Booker T. Washington’s invitation to the White House, entitled “A Guest of Honor.”

4. “Treemonisha,” Joplin’s race opera about a young black woman who lifts her village out of ignorance, was ignored in his lifetime and for many years after his death.

5. Joplin, the king of all ragtime composers, was buried in an unmarked grave in New York. He was awarded a Pulitzer Prize posthumously, only after his music was featured in the popular film, “The Sting.”

6. Comedians have always been on the cutting edge of the racial divide. Nearly one hundred years ago, Booker T. Washington wrote that vaudeville star Bert Williams “has done more for our race than I have.”

7. During his stay in America, classical composer Anton Dvorák was widely criticized for insisting that, “the future music of this country must be founded upon what are called negro melodies. This must be the real foundation of any serious and original school of composition to be developed in the United States.”

8. Fifty years before Malcolm X popularized, “By any means necessary,” civil rights activist Ida Wells encouraged colored men to carry Winchester rifles in their resistance to lynching.

9. Besides being one of the best-known anti-slavery advocates of his day, and key confidant to President Lincoln, Frederick Douglass was also a passionate defender of rights for women. In 1848 he was one of the key speakers at Seneca Falls, America’s most important convention on women’s rights.

10. At the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Africans were allowed to exhibit, but African-Americans were barred. Among the exhibits was a 22,000-pound cheddar cheese from Perth, Ontario and an 18 by 24 foot map of the United States made entirely of pickles from Pennsylvania.

11. Long before Ray Charles was even born, another blind piano player was barnstorming the country. The great Blind Boone used to fill the house wherever he went…except for the time he emptied one. Legend has it that his rendition of “The Marshfield Tornado” was so realistic the audience ran out to look for shelter.

12. Jackie Robinson was not the first African-American baseball player to play in the Major Leagues. That distinction belongs to Moses Fleetwood Walker who played for the Toledo Blue Stockings in 1884, five years before baseball barred African-Americans from taking the field.

King of Rags resurrects America’s forgotten sons and daughters: piano players like Blind Boone who wore a gold watch with 33 diamonds though he couldn’t read the time, Civil Rights activists like Ida Wells who relentlessly challenged Chicago’s Columbian Exposition for shutting out African-Americans, and comedians like Bert Williams who helped move the issue of segregation from Broadway to Pennsylvania Avenue. Bronson’s meticulous research was conducted with the help of a start-up fund from York University in Toronto. He did archival research in Sedalia, St. Louis, Kansas City, Chicago, Nashville, Texarkana, and New York, cities that were pivotal to the ragtime scene. He was also given access to rare collections like Bert Williams’ handwritten joke book that is kept at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York, and the Booker T. Washington Papers at Fisk University in Nashville. The project began fortuitously in Texarkana, with a rare performance of Joplin’s “Treemonisha,” just blocks from where the ragtime king was born. King of Rags is a testament to the classical philosophical theme of one man reaching for something more than society wants to allow. It confronts the ways are we shaped by other people, and explores the powers of resistance inside us all.

White Rose Exhibition Opens in Las Vegas

In 1942 a group of German university students, with the support of their philosophy professor, created and distributed leaflets calling for fellow students and citizens to rise up against Hitler’s tyranny. Putting their lives on the line, they denounced the crimes against humanity committed by his dictatorship. They were apprehended and tried in the Nazi People’s Court. In 1943 seven members were executed and many others received severe punishment. Their heroic acts to stand up for what they believed in, even knowing the consequences if caught, define true courage. The display consists of large photos of the students, including brother and sister leaders Hans and Sophie Scholl and professor Kurt Huber, with descriptive narratives of the group’s extraordinary efforts.

She was five when her father, a Lufthansa airline executive, received a transfer from Munich to JFK. As a shy German girl, she learned English in a black childrens’ choir on Long Island to the tunes of Bill Whithers and the Jackson Five. Though she always loved to sing, she never aspired to being a professional performer. Her dream was to become the cultural attaché at the German Embassy in Washington, D.C., and so she chose a major in international studies in college, with a minor in music. She has studied arias, Lieder, theater and opera, the Broadway repertoire and jazz. On a trip to the Texas hill country in 1988, she fell in love with Austin and lived there for over a decade surrounded by blues, bluegrass, jazz and folk. Today, she brings all of these influences to her songs. Today she lives in Berlin and NYC, working as a cabaret singer. Boston: Exhibition on 50 Years Élysée Treaty

The exhibition is comprised of 26 poster boards containing photos, text, reproductions of historical documents and quotes that follow the evolution of the Franco-German cooperation and the birth of the Élysée Treaty. It was developed by the German Information Center Paris (CIDAL) and was brought to and distributed in the United States by the German Information Center Washington.

On Friday, May 10 at 7:00 pm, there is the Exhibition Opening and Lecture with Colette Mazzucelli (New York University) and Erwan Lagadec (George Washington University).

Dr. Colette Mazzucelli has taught a variety of courses at the Center for Global Affairs since 2005 including peacemaking and conflict resolution, international relations in the post-Cold War era, ethnic conflicts, and EUrope in the 21st century. In addition, she is introducing an India regional course in the MSGA Program. Her graduate studies at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University (MALD, 1987), the Center for European Studies, Harvard University, and the Department of Government, Georgetown University (PhD, 1996), also reflect her engagement in the transatlantic community. Dr. Mazzucelli’s doctoral research, conducted as a Fulbright Scholar at the Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po) Paris in 1991, contributed to the volume France and Germany at Maastricht Politics and Negotiations to Create the European Union (Routledge, 1999; Kindle Edition, 2007). In 1992-93, she assisted with the ratification of the Treaty on European Union in the Federal Republic of Germany as a Bosch Foundation Fellow. She is the recipient of 11 national and international fellowships in 7 countries, including Bosch, Fulbright, and Rotary.

Dr Erwan Lagadec is an Adjunct Professor of International Affairs at George Washington University and, since 2006, a Foreign Policy Institute fellow at the Center for Transatlantic Relations at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). He is also a lecturer at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University where he teaches European civilization and security. He is an affiliate at Harvard University’s Center for European Studies and an Adjunct Associate Professor at Tulane University’s Disaster Resilience and Leadership Academy. Erwan Lagadec holds a D.Phil. (PhD) in history from the University of Oxford (Trinity College), and an MA from the University of Paris-I (Sorbonne). His latest book, Transatlantic Relations in the 21st Century: Europe, America, and the Rise of the Rest (Routledge, 2012) offers an overview of the interface between European integration, Transatlantic relations, and the ’rise of the rest’ in the early 21st century.

LA: Swiss Games Presented at Game Art Festival

Four games from the Geneva University of Art and Design appear in the Third Annual UCLA Game Art Festival, hosted at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, California. Three of them were previously on view at swissnex San Francisco in the Game Gazer exhibition, and another was created in April during a joint workshop between students from Geneva and UCLA.

The Game Art Festival, curated by artist and Director of the UCLA Game Lab, Eddo Stern, showcases a selection of 35 international cutting-edge videogames, tournaments, machinima, screenings, and more. Last year’s festival attracted more than 1,000 visitors to enjoy and play.

The Salastina Music Society presents Arnold Schoenberg’s “Verklärte Nacht,” on May 10 & 11.

The performance is based on German poet Richard Dehmel’s poem of the same name with an in-depth exploration by KUSC Radio Host Brian Lauritzen prior to the concerts.

Performers include Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra Principal Cellist Andrew Shulman, Pacific Symphony violists Meredith Crawford and Luke Maurer, and celebrated young chamber cellist Rebecca Merblum, as well as violinists Kevin Kumar and Maia Jasper.
