German Student Academy Award Winners Honored in Los Angeles

The Student Academy Awards®, presented each fall by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, are among the most prestigious awards in the field of student films. This year, three student filmmakers from Germany will receive this prestigious award for their work. AYNY – MY SECOND EYE (Ahmad Saleh -Academy of Media Arts Cologne/KHM) will receive the Gold Medal in the Foreign Animation category. WHERE THE WOODS END (Felix Ahrens -Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF) and INVENTION OF TRUST (Alex Schaad University of Television and Film Munich (HFF)) will be presented with awards in the Foreign Narrative category. Whether these will be Gold, Silver or Bronze Medals will be revealed at the official awards ceremony.

In recognition of these talented filmmakers’ achievements, the GABA Film Initiative and the Goethe-Institut Los Angeles, in cooperation with White Bear PR and with the support of the German Consulate General in Los Angeles will present a special screening of these three films at the Goethe-Institut on September 23 and celebrate the filmmakers and their teams.

A discussion with the filmmakers and a reception will follow the screenings.

AM ENDE DER WALD (WHERE THE WOODS END)

When a routine traffic stop close to the Czech border spins out of control, young German police officer Elke shoots the man they have stopped. While suspended from duty, Elke is racked with guilt. As her emotions become unbearable, she makes her way to the Czech Republic to find the family of the man she has killed.

The young teacher Michael Gewa receives a mysterious message – the personal rating service „b.good” has bought his online and mobile data to evaluate his professional skills and his personality in several categories. After neglecting the consequences, he finds himself in a moral fight for trust in the midst of students, colleagues and friends.

Displaced by war, an anxious mother tries to shield her two sons from danger, keeping them indoors dreaming of a beautiful Oud, a musical instrument they’ve fallen in love with. Venturing outside to collect scrap metal, hoping to earn money, the pair soon understands their mother’s fear. But as strong birds will always fly, the two boys become one to overcome their trauma.
