For the first time in history, a Head of State from Germany had been invited to speak before the US Congress. Chancellor Angela Merkel followed an invitation by Nancy Pelosi to speak before the House of Representatives and the Senate on November 3, 2009. Prior to this historical event, she met with US President Obama for talks about Afghanistan and various other topics concerning both nations. German journalist Lars Halter who heard Merkel’s speech at the US Congress told German World that she was greeted with a very warm welcome and that her address received much applause from the members of Congress.
