Helping Haiti

German Chancellor Angela Merkel encouraged more citizens to give to relief funds in an open letter published in Bild newspaper on January 19. “The people in Haiti need our continued support,” Merkel writes. “They need our solidarity.”

The Austrian Red Cross has a unit specialized in clean water and subsequently plague prevention. Specialists, among them two Tyroleans Michael Wolf und Herbert Thaler, are in Haiti providing clean drinking water for around 20.000 people. These two experts are extremely experienced having helped in Irak, Pakistan, Ruanda, Sudan and after the Tsunami in Thailand.

So far 38 Austrians were in Haiti during the catastrophe, 8 Austrians are still missing in Haiti.

Germany, who’s Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle called it a “tragedy of apocalyptic proportions.”, collected over 18 Million Euro in the “Wir wollen helfen – Ein Herz für Kinder” a Gala moderated by Thomas Gottschalk and Steffen Seibert.

The German Consulate in Miami is asking everbody’s help for the TAC Florida. The organization is asking for donations in order to be able to purchase urgently needed technical material like water purification equipment and emergency lighting for Haiti. The TAC cooperates with aid workers from Germany’s THW (Technisches Hilfswerk) who already are on location in Haiti.
