“Pina” Dances Across America

Wim Wenders may not have received his Oscar, but American moviegoers and dance lovers are certainly enjoying his amazing 3D hommage to Pina Bausch and the Tanztheater.
“Pina” ended Oscar weekend, February 26, at number 32 of the box-office charts in North America. Dancing in 84 cinemas, an additional take of $192,182 lifted the box-office total to an impressive $2.558 million in ten weeks. Back in Germany, “Pina” was seen by some 480,000 people, generating a Kinokasse of €4.389 million (approx. $5,9 million). The following week (March 2-4), Wender’s film lost 20 locations and, with $157,961, 17.8% of the previous week. The average box-office per cinema of $2,468 was slightly higher, however. In its 12th weekend of release (March 11), “Pina” dropped again to 50 screens and crossed the $3 million milestone in the process. Grossing another $128,000, “Pina” increased its location average again ($2,560). The total of $3,037,000. makes “Pina” the 50th highest grossing documentary of all time.
Werner Herzog has two entries in the top 100 docs in North America. “Cave of Forgotten Dreams” (2011) grossed $5.305 mil. and “Grizzly Man” (2005) $3.178 million. “Pina” has already surpassed fellow Oscar nominee “The Story of the Weeping Camel” (2004) with $1.753 million. For additional persepective, the top three performers on the list are “Fahrenheit 9/11” by Michael Moore (2004; $119.19 million), “March of the Penguins” (2005; $77.44 mil.) and “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” (2011; $73.01 mil.).
