The Ball’s 55th Consecutive Annual Gala at the Waldorf=Astoria on February 5th

New York, NY: In a dramatic and timely move, it was announced today that the 55th Viennese Opera Ball’s “Magical Night at the Opera” on February 5th, in partnership with the UN Office for Partnerships, UN Foundation, and the anti-malaria “Nothing But Nets” campaign, has shifted its charitable outreach to benefit the UN’s Haitian Relief efforts.

Long hailed as society’s premiere gala, the legendary Viennese Opera Ball’s Executive Director Marcie Rudell issued the statement saying, “We have re-focused the mission goals for the 2010 Ball. The charitable proceeds will be given to our United Nations partners for their important work helping those devastated by the recent earthquake in Haiti.”

In addition to the Ball’s trademark horse and carriage – the only time an actual horse-drawn carriage is seen in the Waldorf’s famed Grand Ballroom – Ball invitees will be thrilled with special guests such as Dancing with the Stars’ Maksim Chmerkovskiy, American Idol alum and star of “Rock of Ages” star Constantine Maroulis, Nothing But Nets Executive Director Elizabeth Gore (just returned from climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro), Tony-Award winning/multi-hyphenate Geoffrey Holder, former Alvin Ailey dance partner Carmen De Lavallade, and famed Austrian Magician Magic Christian.

International Debutantes, Diplomats, Dignitaries, opera singers from the Metropolitan Opera, who will be performing arias from “The Magic Flute”, West Point Cadet Escorts and Color Guard will dance side by side to the music of Peter Duchin and his orchestra. The Viennese choreographer Heinz Heidenreich will choreograph the Debutantes and Escorts, led by Kristen Dalton, the reigning Miss USA and a West Point Cadet, as well as two Viennese dancers in original performances. And, of course, Mr. Heidenreich will also conduct his charismatic Midnight Quadrille.

The Ball is also hosting an online auction at http://www.charitybuzz.com until February 18th. Guests and supporters can bid on lots including performance tickets and backstage post-show chats with Jerry Seinfeld, David Copperfield, Gavin DeGraw and Judy Collins; swimming lessons from Olympic and World Record gold medalist Ryan Lochte; horseback riding lessons with TV personality Carson Kressley; travel packages; theater tickets; and many more.
