Follow this link for more English-language information about the German candidates.

“Moneyball” und “War Horse” erhielten sechs, während “The Descendants” und “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” fünf Nominierungen erhielten.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has announced the nominations for the 84th Annual Academy Awards of Merit. Wim Wenders’ “Pina” leads another strong year for German talent. “It is fantastic to be nominated in the category of Best Documentary a second time after “Buena Vista Social Club,” specially as it is the first time for a 3D film to be granted that honor,” the filmmaker said. “All the dancers and collaborators of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, together with the crew and the production company Neue Road Movies, are extremely proud of this.”

In addition to its worldwide box office in 22 countries totaling $16 million to-date, “Pina” already received numerous German and European honors, including the best European Documentary Film Award, the Deutsche Filmpreis for Best Documentary Film, as well as the German Documentary Prize. Recently, Wim Wenders himself was honored with the Bavarian Film Prize’s Life Achievement Award. He was also nominated by the Writers Guild of America (West) in the category Best Documentary Screenplay and received a nomination for the BAFTA Awards in Great Britain in the category Best Foreign Language Film.

As Germany’s official submission, “Pina” had also qualified in the latter category reaching the short list of nine finalists. Among the five final nominees, Germany can take pride in co-producing Agnieszka Holland’s harrowing Holocaust drama “In Darkness” with Canada and submitting country Poland. Providing Berlin and Leipzig locations, Schmidtz Katze Filmkollektiv and Studio Babelsberg also brought in German actors Benno Führmann and Maria Schrader, to name but two. Five German state and federal media organizations provided additional funding.

For “Raju,” their thesis film at Hamburg Film School with support from Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein, director Max Zähle and producer Stefan Gieren received a nomination as Best Short Feature – Live Action. The 24 minute drama revolves about a German couple that adopted a young boy from an orphanage in Kolkata, India. When he disappears, “they realize that their eagerness to help is not the solution, but in fact part of the problem itself,” German Films noted. “Raju” screened at numerous festivals, including Max Ophüls Festival Saarbrücken 2011, Valencia (Spain), Aspen, Col. and Palm Springs, Calif. At the 2011 LA Shorts Fest 2011, “Raju” was deemed Best Foreign Film. In addition earning the top prize at the Angelus Student Film Festival 2011, the film also received the Honorary Student Academy Award 2011 in Bronze. Since 2000, there have been a total of six Oscar nominations and two Oscars for German shorts, “Quiero Ser” by Florian Gallenberger and “Toyland” by Jochen Alexander Freydank.

Last but not least, Lisy Christl was nominated for her Costume Design for Roland Emmerich’s Shakespeare mystery “Anonymous” (co-produced by Vierzehnte Babelsberg Film GmbH Produktion, Berlin). Christl, who began her career working in the wardrobe department for Joseph Vilsmaier’s “Stalingrad” in 1993, has several Foreign Language Oscar candidates on her resume, including “Brother of Sleep”, “Caché (Hidden)” and “John Rabe”. This nomination comes on the heals of Christl’s designer colleagues being honored with mentions from the Art Directors Guild for their work on “Anonymous.”

The 84th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, 26 February 2012 at Hollywood & Highland Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live in more than 25 countries.

Olive Films is proud to present the US theatrical release of Germany’s Oscar entry for 2011, WHEN WE LEAVE, a film by Feo Aladag, starring Sibel Kekilli (Head-On). Winner of BEST FILM and BEST ACTRESS awards at 2010 Tribeca Film Festival, as well as winner of BEST ACTRESS award at the German Film Awards, WHEN WE LEAVE will have its US Theatrical premiere in New York and Los Angeles in January 2011. A national release will follow.

Director, producer and writer Feo Aladag‘s breathtaking feature film debut WHEN WE LEAVE is a gripping and complex portrait of a family in crisis, far removed from any clichés. Aladag is supported by a superb cast, first and foremost Sibel Kekilli (HEAD-ON) whose performance is absolutely hypnotizing. Playing opposite her are Florian Lukas (NORTH FACE), Alwara Höfels (RABBIT WITHOUT EARS), Nursel Köse (THE EDGE OF HEAVEN), and Turkish stars Derya Alabora and Settar Tanriogen.

In awarding the film Best Narrative Feature Award, and Best Actress Award for Sibel Kekilli, the Tribeca Film Festival Narrative Jury said of the film: “WHEN WE LEAVE examines one woman’s struggle for personal freedom. It is a riveting and heartbreaking story of a woman trapped in an abusive relationship, who must not only free herself from that marriage, but also the cultural prejudices and judgments that would keep her there. Feo Aladag built the nuances of her film over a six year period. She rehearsed her actors for seven months. She immersed herself in every detail of a culture that is revealed to us in remarkable detail. The result is a film that balances complex social issues with honest human yearnings. Through the brutality, WHEN WE LEAVE is also a story of tenderness, the struggle for compassion, the inexorable pull of family and the need to love and be loved.” German-born Umay (Sibel Kekilli) flees her oppressive marriage in Istanbul, taking her young son Cem with her. She hopes to find a better life with her family in Berlin, but her unexpected arrival creates intense conflict. Her family is trapped in their conventions, torn between their love for her and the traditional values of their community. Ultimately they decide to return Cem to his father in Turkey. To keep her son, Umay is forced to move again.

After the fantastical fairy tale “Nimmermeer” in 2007 (written and directed by Toke Constantin Hebbeln), this Weihnachtsmann marks the eighth nomination for the Ludwigsburg, Germany-based film school. According to the tagline, the 38-minute drama is about “The holiest night, the loneliest people. A singer, a killer and Santa Clause. United in their destiny….”

The other finalists are “The Confession” (byTanel Toom National Film and Television School, United Kingdom, “Janna & Liv” (Therese Ahlbeck, Dramatiska Institutet, Sweden), “The Road Home” (Rahul Gandotra, London Film School, United Kingdom) and “Trieste Is Ours” (Ziga Virc, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia). Together with U.S.-based Student Academy Award winners the selected international student filmmaker will be flown to Los Angeles for a week of industry-related activities and social events that will culminate in the awards ceremony on Saturday, June 12, at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Several past German winners in the Honorary Foreign Film competition have gone on to earn further recognition from the Academy. Reto Caffi, a winner in 2008, received a nomination in the Live Action Short Film category for his film “Auf der Strecke (On the Line)” at the 81st Academy Awards. In 2005, at the 78th Academy Awards, student winner Ulrike Grote’s “Ausreisser (The Runaway)” was nominated in the same category. In 2000, Florian Gallenberger won both the Honorary Foreign Film award and the Oscar in the Live Action Short Film category with “Quiero Ser (I want to be…).”
